Hi all....

I have a question... I need to lift my original 186 chrome rocker cover to clear the roller rockers..

Do I buy a 10mm spacer or a rocker cover that is wider with bolts going through it as to bolts on outside?

Ide really like the original one on.... any thoughts/ has any one else done this?

Ive read that some after market covers have baffle/oil leak issues?

Mike

Mine hit the adjusting nut where the pcv valve fits into the cover, so the engine builder milled a few mm off the nut.

Your pretty crafty Mike.im going to cut 2
rocker covers up and make it taller so it
still looks stocko.just need a tig to do it..

Bit of mucking about but i reckon you
can fab one up without too much fuss..

Getting the plate is easier though.

What are they worth

Yep. Seen that on a 6cyl HK Monaro that a panel beater mate of mine worked on.

I went through all this year's ago and the best option is to use the original GMH rocker cover and use contact glue to double up two rocker cover gaskets. Doing this gave me enough clearance for my roller rockers.

At one stage I bought an after market chrome rocker cover which was difficult to fit due to the bolt holes not lining up adequately. Their next problem is that the baffles are absolutely rubbish, they sit down so low that it makes the internal height only a few mm different to a std GMH cover. The baffles then fill up with oil which in my case then poured out of the breather holes in the oil cap and all over the engine and burnt when it was on the exhaust, driving up the freeway I was like the bat mobile with a smoke screen. I had to fit a spacer under the oil cap to raise it off the baffle.

When I finally got my hands on a good 73 model rocker cover it fitted perfectly as you'd expect and with the doubled up gaskets I've never had a problem or looked back.

To add to that I didn't have to flatten out the original baffle either.

I tried 3 different brands of roller rockers on my LJ XU1, ALL of them interfere with the rocker cover at valve 1 and 12 where the cover has an angle at the corner. This was with both a Holden standard cover and a later model alloy cover ( blue/ black motor?). Had to grind metal off relevant rockers  to clear, this in spite of strict instructions from manufacturers not to do so. You would  think that the YT and Crane people could get this right after all these bloody years . These were standard ratio rockers by the way, lift at valve is .510".

Just like you'd expect HM9C's which are made for LC and LJ's to fit without having to belt a big ding in your floor and cut the corner off your engine mount.

Hi Mike,

For what its worth..heres my setup ( I did not do the initial setup,  so cant answer specific details, but it works, after the 1 and 12 rockers had the edges tweaked?).

I'm not sure what brand of rockers I've got. They were already fitted when I bought the car and I haven't seen any identifying marks on them. I also don't think that either the first or last one have been modified, but that's never been an issue so maybe I've just never noticed. Sorry that I can't help you with that.

Hi all... Thanks heaps for the replies... Gives me a few options.. Im thinking of going with what I have on the motor and making an original looking filler cap out of a push in base with original top and try and replicate the PCV valve holder. I dont relly want to cut 2 to make one. it will hit the side anyways, and then to chrome..

Ive trolled the internet looking nad most after market ones that have the bolts through the top leak, so they say.. So to save some cash and not waste my time.. Ill use what I have... Not much else I can do..

Thanks

again..

Mike

Hi all... I managed to make a oil cap for the rocker cover im using.. Looks the part..

Pulled the base off a push in cap, used the inner and outer of an original one with some  alumin scourer as filter..

Painted it 2k silver with a fresh decal... It will do..

what are people doing for the bent rubber pipe that goes on the  PCV valve? are they available?
