Hi all, I have recently got my hatchback back on the road after several years of storage. It runs a black 308 out of a VK, L34 style heads etc. I have noticed that when its sitting in my driveway which has a very slight incline the oil pressure gauge ( factory ss cluster) indicates good pressure but on the flat road it reads no pressure. Oil level all good. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Jayson

Hi Jayson, I've recently had oil pressure issues. (ended up being caused by a rag left inside the engine.) Best approach is to start eliminating potential causes one by one. I don't think that you have a priming issue as you get pressure in the driveway. Anyway, first I'd be changing the oil, or at least draining it to see if there is any debris in it. It may also be that water/moisture has entered the sump. Next I'd be replacing the filter. Cut open the old filter and check for debris. Then I'd be using a mechanical oil pressure gauge to check the pressure. They read instantly, the dash gauge is thermal and very slow. It is fairly common for old engines to have very low pressure at idle when hot. So keep that in mind. Do these things first before we start looking at the pump and pick up. Regards, Steve.

Thanks Steve, will try your suggestions. I don't think it is anything serious as all seems good, it may even be a cluster issue? Just concerning when gauge does weird things. Car in driveway( slight incline) and idling has good pressure on gauge, but drops away to nothing when on the flat road.

Jayson.

Get yourself a cheap mechanical gauge, plumb it in and go for a drive. Then you will know what you really have.

Would also be worth getting a 10 ohm resistor, this will let you check full scale on the gauge, Oil, Water and Fuel all use the same resistance for low and full on the gauge.

If you put a 10 ohm resistor in place of the sender your oil pressure gauge should show full.

also a thicker grade of oil , may make a difference as well, as i had low psi on idle , using a thicker oil sorted the problem , i just make extra sure i am at operating temp before i put the boot in ,

just a thought, wazza
