Removal of reverse switch on Aussie 4 speed on vehicle

Hi all,

 

Helping a friend piece together his LJ. The auto-electrician came out and got everything going including the reverse lights. After hooking the wires up to the reverse switch they aren't working so obviously an issue with the switch.

My question is can the switch be removed whilst the driveline is in the vehicle? I have had a look and for a novice like me it looks pretty tight. He needs to get this sorted so he can pass for a blue slip.

Do I need to drop the cross-member slightly to allow more room?

Did a search and found some information on LX V8s but nothing definitive on LJ sixes.

Place a trolley jack under the gearbox and remove the gearbox support member. Lower the transmission down far enough get your fingers and a short ring spanner up in there to replace the switch then put it all back together.

 

Take care to ensure the engine and/or its accessories don't foul on anything in the engine bay.

I put one in while the box was in the car, not easy to do.

 

To tighten it I used a spanner for tight spaces which was pretty much just the head of an open ended spanner, very little room in  there from top or bottom.

 

Also, my tunnel is a bit munted, so may have had more room than in an unmolested tunnel.

 

Dave's tip above sounds like the way to go.

They are a serviceable part too, with only 2 or 3 connections to clean up & lubricate. Don't know why you wouldn't have a go at fixing it, there's been posts on this before. Gary.

It's a sealed unit with 2 terminals stickin out its bum,not sure if they are available any more,I have a couple of spare gearboxes in the shed I can't remember if there is a serviceable switch on one I can check in morning if needed

Yes please Phillip, i was told they're a serviceable unit by a forum member & another member told me he did his fairly easily. Gary.

Before you go opening it, just double check the crimp connections on the wires.

Check the continuity with a multimeter between the wire and to top of the switch.

I had opened mine up thinking the internals needed a clean but as i turned out

years of heat, oil and dirt had affected the crimps.

I ended up cutting and soldering the wire over the top all the way to stamped contact.

Yeah I cracked mine open and gave it a clean up. It's only a switch. A continuity check before hand may save you removing it.

Really appreciate the offer Phillip but he has already purchased one. Will have a go next weekend and see how we go. I think the top of the switch was quite dirty and the solders were not the best.

Another thing worth mentioning, if the lever on the switch is not engaged in the slot in the selector lever the rev lights won't work.
