This is my LX SS that I bought a few months ago. All credit for the work goes to the resto guy as I don't have the skills to do my own work but I know what I like. I like Toranas :) Enjoy!

These first pics are composite photos taken by resto guy as his reference for how things are located and where the paint lines are etc and the beginning of the strip down. Hope this picture thing works.

Yeah, no kidding! That's the trouble with not having the skills to match my interest, I have to pay $$$ but at least I'm lucky to know this resto guy otherwise I wouldn't be able to have a car like that.

Are you working on your own car, resto or mod perhaps?

Cheers,

Liz :)

Not much rust compared with pics of others I've seen. The radiator support is the only replacement needed, both ends of the beaver panel have been repaired, some old repairs were found along the N/S below where the stripes are located and that will be tidied up. "Rust in all the usual places" was what Jason said but actually he was surprised that the hatch itself was rust free and he was even able to remove the rubber from around the glass without damaging it so it's probably better than average with rust.

6 months was the timeframe he gave me but that was before he started so I guess that can change in either direction. Work started in early April, so it might just miss out on Toranafest but I'll put it in next year, might enter the XU1 instead, just for the fun of it as it's not perfect.

Got stacks of pics of the LX and just put the first few up to test if my photo uploading ability worked. More to come.

Cheers,

Liz :)

Yes Liz im the same, not qualified enough to be taking on the job of a proper resto,
so i have local guys ive know for a long time doing it properly.
its been a full nut and bolt strip, its been a year and i think in reality it will be another year.
i too thought i may make toranafest but now i realise it will unfortunately not be this year.
But these restos cant be rushed if they are to be done properly.
look forward to seeing your hatch come to life...its a nice looking car as is.
cheers

Definitely with you when it comes to not rushing a resto, that's the last thing you want. I was lucky with the LX, it has been a great starting point, with pretty much everything there. Just got this week's photos from the resto but will have to play catch-up and post the last two months worth here over the next couple of weeks. So many photos.

Cheers,

Liz :)

Hi Liz,

It's awesome you will be documenting & sharing your restoration of your original SS.

My SS wasn't as complete as yours but mostly there & it will be going through the same process.

I'll be restoring a lot of the dissembled parts myself before they go back in.

Your car is a very rare car, surviving pretty much unmolested. It's a great reference car for me & also other restorers.

I'm also aiming to have my hatch enter the following Toranafest 2019.

Best of luck & enjoy the challenge..

Cheers John

Thanks John and Col,

It's hard to get good reference photos so glad to be of some help. Should turn out just fine, I have plenty of confidence in the guy doing all the work for me. I feel very lucky.

Cheers,

Liz :)

I must be a sucker for punishment, restoed mine 4 times in 25 years!

Gets a scratch, needs a new paint job!

Gets a divorce needs a new motor and a new paint job!

Hey Liz, did it really need a resto? Looks like it should have been left as a real survivor, cheers Aaron.

Hi Aaron,

Yeah, it definitely wasn't an easy decision to have it restored.

There was a couple of spots with rust bubbling including what to me looked like could be structural but actually was just the paint over the top of an old repair, I couldn't tell that until paint was removed though and there was some patchy paint along the N/S where old repairs had been done, rust in both ends of the beaver panel as well. I guess I could've kept it as is for a while, not been able to rego it and it would have slowly deteriorated or I could try to get it restored without having to do major stuff like new panels or repro parts. I chose the second option but not an easy decision that's for sure.

The only repro bits used so far are the stripes of course as that is the only way and lower radiator support. I searched around for the correct tail light to replace my damaged one, not easy as most on eBay etc are painted black but I eventually found part # correct black plastic one. Going to attempt to clean the original carpet and see how that comes-up and I'm looking for an original seat to take some trim from to patch my drivers seat.

Still a bit conflicted about whether I did the right thing.

Cheers,

Liz :)

Thanks Gene, yep hope to still be driving it when I'm older and more grey. A few more decades if I'm lucky.

Cheers,
