Been mucking around repainting and polishing a couple of hotwire mags I picked up and after a few different colour trial and errors I finally found a colour that is reasonably close to the original metallic grey/black.

Its available from Bunnings for around $13 a can and it has the metallic fleck to it and is flat finish. I am reasonably happy with the result.

Nice.
Did you mask the wires or just wipe it off?

I scraped it off while the paint was still soft after about an hour. Then just gave the aluminium a wipe with thinners.

Were the early Aunger hot wires the same colour or were they black?

Not really sure as I think mine are reasonably early. On my car I have 10x15 and 10x14 and they are quite black, the ones that I did in this post were 8x14 and 9-1/4x14 with a series number written inside the rim in marker of 608 so I would say that is quite early and were reasonably flat black as well. The colour I did them in is slightly more silver because of the metal flake in the paint but for me they come up pretty close.

Yeh I have played around with various automotive spray cans trying to achieve the correct Cheviot grey and didn't get a satisfactory result but you have hit the nail on the head.

A really nice result and at a decent price.
