Can these be bought reco'd or otherwise where can one get it reco'd

Pretty easy to do yourself, Barry. I've done a few over the years, there used to be only about $30 worth of parts... but that was a while ago!

The hardest bit is drilling the old roll pins so you can crack the locknut and unscrew the tie rods, after that it's a piece of cake.

Looks like Rare Spares sell the rack boots ($34.32ea) but I can't find any of the nylon bushes on their website?

Seems they also offer a change-over service on reconditioned rack assemblies too at $377.52

EDIT: I've never looked but I imagine steering racks have date codes on them too so if it still has the original rack and you want to keep the car "numbers matching" maybe rebuild your own... something to consider anyway?

Thanks Andrew, not much use to keeping the missus's Hatch original as it was a Sunbird at some stage of its life but not now with A9X front and rear spoilers, SL/R gauges, 186S motor and trimatic and not forgetting the respray from Boring Beige to Ultra Blue

Having every thing new on the front might be the go as I want the car to last long after I'm gone

As a cost comparable, I recently got a changeover rack from Supasteer Aust (in Melbourne) for $330.  Cheers Ron

That might a good idea if I could afford it

Torana steering at low speeds around town needs a fair bit of muscle

Just spoke to my son who works for Burson and although they are not affiliated with Rares, he is going to see what he can get for me

Also have to factor in freight unfortunately

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting give them a try, just thought the cost comparison would assist with your enquiries.  Cheers Ron

Make sure you don't get that left hand drive rack, like in the Rares picture!

G'day All

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in the steering rack of a 77 Sunbird Hatch ie 4pot banger to a 6 cylinder LX Hatch or is there any difference to the earlier 76 LX

I'm thinking if any, on gear ratios

UC racks are solidly mounted, more on ratios here:

The UC rack is also slightly wider between the inner joints

It has metric bolts and the holes on the k-frame are different.

So, can a UC rack be mount to an LX ? ,  and is there any advantage in doing this ?n

Yes it can and the best advantage would be the solid mounts, if you really want to capitalise on UC RTS to get the most out of your steering, replace the K-frame and control arms too.

G'day All

My wifes' Hatch "is/was" a Sunbird and the mounting brackets are different from the Sunbudgie to LX

My spare rack is LX but Marty at Supasteer Australia will let me have a Sunbird rebuilt unit in exchange for it

Will be on its way on Saturday and reco'd unit coming back via a mate who is coming up for our Swap Meet here in Cootamundra on Fathers Day ie 3 September

Thanks everyone for your input  :spoton:
