My poor old Russet has had what I think is a front bearing noise for a couple of months , after a month I pulled then out and had a look , no marks or pits so I greased them and put them back , still had the noise , I have a bit of spare time coming up and want to have another look , my question is can they make a fair bit of noise and still look ok ?

Hmmm.maybe its coming from the rear Bruce?

Id put couple jack stands under housing and
Get her in top and see if you can hear it.

I thought the back ones made a different pulsating sound and they were done twelve months ago  , everyone I have in the car thinks it is the front passenger side but I'll try anything . Thanks for your idea , the good part is the cops have seen me going slow for months .

Does the noise change when you load and unload the front wheels? ie: turn corners.

No real change , on or off load , still there when I knock it out of gear too , the disc brakes are not binding either.

Why not just change them out anyway? Super easy and then you know all four corners are good.

When replacing the front bearings check to see if the correct seal is being used. I have found the only ones that fit correct are the genuine Holden ones. The correct ones are listed for drum brakes.

are you checking both inner and outer bearings?  it may sound stupid, but i have known people to only check the outer race.

Yep checked inner and outer , it ended up being the diff , I've never had a diff sound like that , it was a 4 to 1 limo reconed eight years ago , It copped a hard time one day then it started making the noise two weeks after that , all good the 3.36 I had in the shed ended up being perfect . the thing that sent me down the wrong track was doing a wheel bearing in the FX earlier which had a very similar noise .
