I understand the thinking behind changing brake pads, but what are the chances of getting asbestosis from gaskets? Any enthusiast would know the risks and how to mitigate them anyway. Its the Nanny creating more jobs for the boys.

Interesting reading. I was thinking about importing.

Now i would have to factor in a new clutch & brake pads, exhaust gaskets & intake gaskets & maybe mufflers.

Then there is no guarantee that Border Patrol will accept photographic proof that those parts are fitted even with part & labour receipts so they could send me off for asbestos testing at additional cost. <sigh>

Yep just another case of someone smoking too much govvy c0ck and frOcking things up for the rest of us. There has been shit coming in from China for years with undeclared asbestos where ever they can get away with it and this sort of shit is the fallout.

ABF = Aust. Bureau of frOckwits?

I'm not sure if this is more a case of "The Nanny State" getting out of control or it's just another bunch of government mooches creating work for themselves?

Either way it boils down to dear old Joe Public getting screwed-over yet again!

Just had 2 polaris quads recalled for brakes with asbestos. They are changing for free.

I am told the Great Walls brake pads have asbestos in them. Wonder how that gets through.

About 12 Years ago when they were selling Proton cars here, the RTA sent us a directive to double check the car seats during pink slip inspections. Apparently the first three shipments of car the seats were filled with straw ( not fire retardant foam like every other decent manufacturer ) which was flammable and a risk to Australia's agriculture from parasites in the straw. (Christ do you think so) not smoker friendly either. Our government blokes must of been on the ball when they signed off on the importation of these shit boxes.. I had to read the document five times to make sure I wasn't reading it incorrectly and couldn't stop laughing every time.

I was talking to an importer in the last month and he said he knew of a car that got pulled up and they wanted the windscreen sealer removed due to asbestos.

Supposedly they are only pulling up every tenth car or so due to lack of staff.

The importer I spoke to said he offered a removal service for a modest fee and a signed declaration to go with the import paperwork to make things easy. He also said most importers expected it all to disappear within 12 months due to the effort involved and the powers that be not thinking it through properly, wait and see I guess...

One of the reasons Great Wall's have disappeared from showrooms.

On a separate but similar note for those who haven't heard yet, the AU$1000 tax-free threshold on imported goods disappears July 1st next year (2018) as well.

Whereas previously any item below AU$1000 value could be imported direct without additional cost, this new system will mean that every single imported item will be intercepted and held until the GST/charges are collected.

Can you imagine the amount of work that's going to create!

How much will it cost the taxpayer to store a 50c item and do all the paperwork to collect the 5c GST owed? Or will they charge a $10 administration fee to collect their 5c in tax?

Surely on most older cars, these parts would have been changed with more modern non asbestos equivalents.

Politician ; "No you can't import that rare and valuable vintage car to Australia. It is way too dangerous. Now excuse me while I go and find somebody to blame for the lead in the Chinese water pipes that were installed in the Perth Children's Hospital!"

Don't let the media scare you out of importing. It's their job to stir up fear, it sells more papers than good news. There's companies now springing up and combating the issue:

As most would be aware, Bosskraft relocated to the USA last year and with the recent enforcement of long existing asbestos legislation, by ABF in Australia, Bosskraft have jumped through the hoops and become asbestos qualified in the USA, authorised by the US Federal Gov to identify, take samples for testing (if required) and remove it from vehicles. The hope is that we can intercept these issues BEFORE the cars (or anything, actually) leaves the USA, and we'll be able to issue a certificate, clearing the goods of asbestos, which should keep the ABF off the importers tails.

We've been working with our long time customs broker in Australia and he suggests that this asbestos issue, is not something that will go away. It's here to stay. He also suggests that there was currently nobody in the USA, authorised to perform this work, and it left importers open to likely seizures by ABF, of imported vehicles, with fines likely to be issued if caught out (and they're frighteningly high!). That being the case, we've figured that the best way to avoid impound costs, storage costs, ridiculous multiple mechanics 'on scene' costs in Aust, is to deal with the issues in the USA, with US Federal certification to satisfy the Aust Gov, issued when cleared of asbestos.

Anyway, if you need our assistance, touch base with us

To quote from the article "The asbestos content of these cars is very high and in places most enthusiasts would not guess".  My first guess would be brakes, clutch assuming they haven't been replaced in last 20 years and some exhaust gaskets, surprise, surprise I'm correct. As a % of the car I'd say its quite small and nobody on the street is going to contract Asbestosis from you driving the car past them , fark I have a garage down the road with asbestos roof, gutter and walls, yep job justification and easy targets  . maybe they should concentrate more on the things that actually do harm like drugs and guns

brakes, clutch ..... I have a garage down the road with asbestos roof, gutter and walls,

It's all about 'friable' asbestos. Your house parts are intact whereas brake pads are turning to dust which can blow around in the wind and if every car is pushing it out you end up with an asbestos smog; that'd be their theory anyway.

maybe they should concentrate more on the things that actually do harm like drugs and guns

We have enough police already but yeah that money could be better spent on schools, hospitals, etc.

Here's a horror story for a Friday arvo....

On a related note, I see that AMCS has a few NZ based cars for sale at the moment. Bad timing unfortunately.

Cheers,

Liz :)

So according to the last paragraph of this article, I can no longer import a Torana to the US as it is Australian designed and produced???

FFS... I thought I got away from my life being controlled by that Government.

Yeah, that bit did seem way overkill but so does the entire story really. The thought of having someone with no car expertise at all, dismantling your car is scary as f$%k.

There's definitely a niche market for specialist car inspectors with asbestos ID and removal credentials though. Surely someone will get onto that soon enough.

Cheers,

Liz :)
