Hi all,

Long time lurker (very long time), have finally come across a set of wheels that looks like I can pick up, at a price. There in lies the issue. Was said to be a matching numbers example. When you see pics, yes a barn find. Has been stored for 14 years and has had rats eat the interior plus who knows what else.

Sooo, it's not matching paint and has a different colour interior. Engine has been repainted a different colour. Not so much matchy now.

Who is the guru now to find out the low down with numbers etc?

Welcome aboard Electra!

Bloody rats, I couldn't count how many thousands of dollars damage I've seen done by rats over the years.

If they've been in the car at all then you'd better figure a complete new wiring loom into your calculations too, and definitely don't connect a battery without checking or you'll likely have a fire to deal with. The little bastards just love chewing the insulation off wires for some reason.

So the trim needs replacing anyway and the paint is probably not up to scratch either, but who cares, it's really the pedigree you're buying so check those numbers carefully!

Excellent point re the wiring. There is the beginnings of a nest in the engine bay. Rear seat base has been nawed on and the rear arm rests are dead.

Body wise it looks pretty good.

Okay first up, the full chassis number should be "CLX041199M" and I would assume it's a 03/77 compliance date.

"8C77LG J577566X" is a MY77 LX SL 202ci six cylinder hatch

"1894-67V" is (or was) a paint colour called "Antelope" (nice colour and fairly rare as hatches go) with Tan trim. BTW, the second paint code should actually be "567-15940" and it would've looked something like this:

met_Antelope_Torana_Hatch_2.jpg

The engine number "HL69397" should be a late February 1977 cast 202 six cylinder block, there should be a "clock" with a code something like "20B7" cast into the side of the block to confirm but it'd be pretty close?

And in conclusion, all those numbers seem to line up, so while it's not an exact science without the GMH records, it looks like that may be what we'd call a "numbers matching" car, that is to say, it likely has the original tags and engine still fitted?

If you wanted to confirm all the above you could contact Holden Historical Services and pay them to generate a report, which will tell you if it is actually all genuine, but they'll charge you AU$90 for their trouble.

Depending on what you have planned, there are many more things that would need to be confirmed if it's gonna be a concours-quality resurrection, but if you're just gonna put flares and a V8 etc. in it then all that doesn't really matter does it!

Thanks BigFella for the info. My apologies for the typo, fat fingers in my phone and a failure to proof read.

It will need to have a retrim (and repairs and replacement of rear seat) and new paint, although even with an inch of dirt looks not to bad. Just the wrong colour

Wiring I am sure will need to be redone, at places. Needs some love, but may be worth it. Will update on how I go
