I would like to cut this sleeve off my Shifter shaft so it's just the shaft.
What is underneath the sleeve, and will it make a big headache if I do cut it off?

I think you will find it actually joins the upper part of the shift to the lower.
If you cut the sleeve off you will have a very short shaft with no thread on it

The sleeve/bush joins the two pieces of the stick. If you remove it you'll need to get the stick welded back together.

Its just an NVH thing isn't it? Plenty around with basic straight stick

If my memory is correct it actually doubles as a rear spring eye bush

Agree, GM-H engineers must have rummaged around in the parts bins and found those bushes fitted perfectly when they were rationalising the shifter production. lol

I've put counterweights on cranes & it wasn't to stop them vibrating ? I'd would describe it as a insulator type bush, as Dave described quite poor in performance similar to the rat trap !

The two ends almost butt up to one another inside the bush.
If you want a shorter gearstick then a hacksaw or grinder is required after you separate the two halves.
To remove the insulator bush you must apply the force to the inner sleeve section.
If you keep hitting the outer section, all the force is absorbed by the rubber.

The plot thickens!
Bush on shifter 1 is approx. 30w x 64L mm
Shifter 2 is approx. 27W x 69L mm
1 might be commodore?
2 might be LH/X?
Clearly not the same bush.
16mmish shaft on both, probably 5/8"
