pic of a HK/G/T and LC bignut master cylinder

LJ has a different top and UC and WB have a different top again

i know tops are not interchangeable..but are the piston bores

the same across all 3 different styles of master cylinders?

and are all piston/springs and internals interchangeable?

They are all 1" bore (sorta)

Pistons interchange between like cyls

So the early ones with the rounded corners like pictured the pistons interchange

So HK-T-G-LC all same. These ones are prone to bad corrosion on the pistons.

LJ has a deeper primary piston - same as HQ-on

LH-UC pistons interchange... the cast body changes mid LX to a different top again

WB is not a big nut nor is late UC as they run the plastic bottle ADR style master with the built in prop...15/16 bore on the uC 1" on the WB. So none of these pistons interchange

Theres a guy on ebay who sells kits with pistons for the different big nut cylinders.... and big nuts.

I'll stick my neck on the line here,

I don't believe so as there is/was 2 NOS rebuild kits on ebay recently one for the LC etc and one for the LH I think it was.

They caught my eye as I thought one of them may come in handy for a nice young fella I know up this way with a Black LH SL/R5000

thanks datto

the problem i got is this

sent all my brakes to local brake guy who had to send master away to be re-sleeved

when i came back the internals were missing, i still think there still there ,but company says it came without internals

no drama as i had a spare anyway, but after soaking it for 10 days they can not get piston out....soooo i need a complete

piston to finish job of, the guy you talk about on ebay ads say it still need to have secondary spring and seat..which i dont have

so would the house top master cylinder lid have the same  internals as an LJ one? as there seems to be lots of them for sale

So items 15/16 + 20 (maybe)

I don't have an LC big nut here to look at

I do have a pair of old pistons out of an LH master I used this guys kit in... so could measure those if need be

He really should do the kit with the last 2 pieces to make everyones life easier.

The later master spring cup should be fine... the spring might be slightly too long (can't remember if the cylinder is longer) but thats not a big issue.

LH-UC pistons interchange... the cast body changes mid LX to a different top again

Hi Dattoman,

Sorry that this is off-topic but you seem to be clued-up in regards to the masters so I have a question...Does my 4/76 LX SS have a Big Nut master? I have the LX parts manual, which shows it as a big nut type but I have also read somewhere on these forums that there were various suppliers to GMH back in the day and there wasn't just one type across the board. Also, in the Torana Tough book there is an LX SS that has been restored to "exacting standards" but it does not have the big nut either. I'm a little confused about it and want to get this correct as part my car's resto job. Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Liz :)

No.

Should be something like this one. Is your car pre ADR27a?

Thanks Brad, yes that is what I would expect it to have, just finding it difficult to sift through lots of conflicting information.

Nice! I helped a mate do up a Datsun 1200, i was just the trade assistant of sorts, (poured the scotch mainly). The 1200 zipped around the suburbs quite nicely.

Cheers,

1200 is abit modern for me

Mine are 1000;s

So double wishbone fronts like a Torana but running a leaf spring

Lots of work to do before this one can hit the track

Most Datsuns have lots of bits that can interchange... suspension mainly... except the 1000. I like to design and make stuff fit.... so I went with the harder car with no bolt ons available.

Sounds great. Lots of skill involved, that's for sure. Beyond my abilities though, I'm okay at handing over the correct size spanner and pouring the drinks.

 Is your car pre ADR27a?

Only just noticed your question. Yes, car is 4/76 so it should be ADR27 I think as 27A started as of 1st July 76. Is that correct?

Cheers,

Liz :)

It's not ADR27 or ADR27A that matters for brakes. The brake changes occurred with the intro of ADR31 in early 1997 (chassis prefix changed from BLX to CLX).

This is when the m/cyl changed & they introduced the PBR alloy callipers etc. The 2-pin pressure differential switch also came in then.

Yeah the ADR question was not related to brakes at all. It was related to your total hose set up. Being ADR27 confirms why its the same as my LH I imagine?

Thanks Brad, yes I've read that there's significant carry over from LH to early LX such as my car. Thanks again for the info.

Liz :)
