(copied from my thread)
howdy!!
car didn't come with a shifter installed.
a th400 ?? (or what am told is one) was thrown in with the car.

the "throw" at the bottom "arm" does not match my trimatic.. so...
figured i would give a uc shifter a go.

myself, am not having as much success at using a UC shifter as others, darn it!

3 things appear to be stopping me

1. the pivot point is about 2 inches forward than a torana console/shifter, and would never let you get in park.
2. it stands on a completely different angle.
3. it is an inch higher than needed (at the chrome stick's "join") and therefore doesn't clear the underneath of auto console, at all.

(uc shifter mounted in pics)

(if moved entire shifter back and re-cut hole, and took to fornt of tunnel will the a sledge hammer and lowered it about 2-3 inchs.. it just might?? work. not doing that though.

on the positive side.. the "throw" is perfect and i can finally shift thru gears for the first time.
that i have enjoyed!

------------

is another shifter suitable??

what is the possibiltiy/complexities of taking the lower "arm" off the uc one, and mounting on my other shifter.

aaargh! double aaargh!

get rid of both uc and th400 shifters and get a shifter from a trimatic HX

double check before you buy , my shifter came out of a hx but may not have been the original

went though the same problem with the th400 shifter after a wreckers sold me the wrong shifter

am worried might have same experience. a lot of money for a shifter i cant use.

makes bloody difficult that i have a comm trimatic with the arm needed on pass side.

would also consider taking the lower arm off the uc shifter and mounting it on the th400 i've got, if anyone knows how to remove/undo the "pin/axle" they are slid on.

Not sure if ALL shifters are the same, but as for the left and right, I know some of them you can simply knock out a roll pin that holds the pivot pin in place and dismantle and reassemble with it as a left rather than a right side shifter.

"simply knock out a roll pin that holds the pivot pin in place and dismantle and reassemble"

.. with.. in my case.. the uc's lower arm onto the th400 shifter.

which would be the cheaper option.. (so i don't have to go out and buy a lx trimatic shifter and swap itself from right to left.)

that would be excellent.

as you mention.. whether all shifter arms are same and can transfer one shifters lower arm and it "slides neatly on" to another is anyone's guess.

if not.. get another lx and do the right to left swap on it.

and.. don't spose you have/know of a vid of how to dismantle handy?? ;)

Yeah ,they have roll pins that hold the lever on one side of the shaft and a spacer in place on the other ,and it looks like they can be swapped from one side to the other ?

Have a look on the under side of shifter , should be able to see the roll pins ?
