 Hi all,

I have recently purchased this GTR dash. Hopefully the attachments turn out.

It is stamped on the back in a triangle with 9 at top, then 7 - 73 at the bottom. I assume it is from a "73 beast. Is it possible that it was from an XU-1 or just generic '73 I note what appears to be an extra lamp at top centre for something. can anyone tell me what this is please? I think I read somewher that this modification was only for '73 models.

I also note the fuel guage is not original. Did the GTR dashes come out with different guage locations? I had an LJ GTR back in "85 and I am sure that this instrument config is the same as mine was but I have seen other dashes with different configs.

Any tips or links to threads for installing into a '71 S 4dr would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Hi

It is from the last half of 1973 (metric instruments) - it was the gauge cluster that was standard on GTRs XU-1s and optional on other models. The light at centre top is the brake fail/handbrake light that was relocated from the centre bottom from 1/1/73. The fuel gauge is not original.

To install it easily, you would need the correct wiring loom - but I am sure that some folks have a workaround for that.

Cheers

You can modify a standard loom with out to much trouble, all that's needed is the ammeter feed and a tachometer wire

Thanks Hutch.
I think I might need extra bulb holders for the instruments. I will do some more research.

The globe holders for the 2" gauges are different from the std instrument globe holders and the globe holder for the GEN light is different again.

I've only searched recently and I have seen varied prices ranging from $250 -$1000, depending on condition, original instruments and if it comes with a loom. I talked got mine $325 but fuel guage is not original and no loom.

So can anyone tell me if the odometer is in miles or kilometres for this cluster?

Klms on the outside, MPh on the inside "dual scale" 200 = "roughly" 120

The odometer in OEM dual scale speedometers records the distance travelled in kilometers.

Your instrument cluster is from a GTR/XU1 as it is fitted with a 120mph speedo. Gauge instrumentation fitted to S/SL models had 100mph speedos.

Secondly, the ammeter/oil pressure gauges have been reversed at some stage.

Thirdly, the temperature/fuel guages have also been reversed from how they were originally assembled, but that is only for LJ models. They are currently in the correct position for LC configuration.

Cheers,

JPXU1 :spoton:

Hey, thanks.

This is useful information. I wasn't aware that the cluster was from a GTR XU-1 so maybe it's a good score.  The fuel gauge is not original but i was suspecting gauges may not be in correct spots. I had a '72 LJ GTR in the 80'sand I know they were in different locations in it compared to this cluster. Appreciated.  Pedro  :D

Edit, my bad you say GTR or XU-1. Got it, Thanks again.

I'm sorry but this myth about the 120mph/200kph speedometer is about to be busted.

My two door S model has the above mentioned speedometer fitted from the factory along with all its other optional upgrades. Maybe this became std in all the sports instrument clusters in the second half of 73??

Back in 1980 I looked at a Chateau Mauve 5/72 LJ 82311 that was for sale. Optioned with 173 M20 disc brakes and sports instrument cluster which had the 120mph speedo.

Man it had more rust than the Cherry Venture :)

I can remember a 73 4 cylinder 4 speed lj when i was younger, 1 owner had a factory sports dash & console & it wasn't the only 1, seemed more common in the 73 models. It was optional like other things . Gary

Hi

The parts catalogue also supports the view that all speedos fitted to gauge clusters were 120 mph/200kph.

This pic is from late '73 owners manual (note that the fascia is not a '73).

Cheers

A shame that many people swapped out the original fuel gauge, when all it needed was a new resistor.
