Wondering if anyone has an image of a genuine L34 timing cover. Do they differ from the standard 308?

According to the LH Torana Parts Cattledog (which includes L34) the engine front cover is the same for all V8 engines.

Reason I ask is I've had my L34 since new and it's different. Many years ago it was in a workshop and came home with a 'high mount' alternator bracket. That was easily noticed and the original returned after some choice words. Now I'm doing a restoration and I noticed the timing cover is like none I have seen. Wondering if it because the L34 was different or the same lowlife did a switcharoo. Stamped into the cover is HOLDEN 2816754 and under that 311.  The actual timing marks are on a screw on plate that attaches to the cover. I have my original L34 parts catalogue supplement and no mention of timing cover.Attached File  IMAG0646.jpg   124.28K   3 downloads

Sorry, 2816752 not a 4 at the end. Fat fingers.

Thanks Dave, still got me scratching my head though. Obviously one number away with mine being 2816752 so it must be close although there's no mention of my number in the L34 parts supplement. The question is, why would anyone removed a bog stock cover (if that is what the L34 had) and replace it with some unknown exotic item.  Still a mystery.

2816752 is the bare casting part number however once the indicator is attached the spare part number changes to 2816753. Hence why it is referred to in the parts catalogue as a Cover Assembly.

Thanks again Dave. The part that confuses me is that whenever I search for images of timing cover for L34 or SLR5000 I only find a casting with a solid lump with timing marks and not with a screw on attachment like mine. That's why I was asking for images of an untouched timing cover for the L34. In my experience I have found that many things to do with the L34 just aren't recorded accurately by GMH due to their low production run. Even an image of a standard SLR5000 timing cover would help me out.

Point duly noted.

Yours is correct Robbie. Does your harmonic balancer have two timing marks?

It's amazing the little differences the L34 had that nobody knew about.

That removable timing cover indicator harks back to HT HG 253 & 308 engines so it is not unique to the L34 engine.

My 1974 SLR/5000 has the screw on timing marker. It is not uncommon for the part number and casting number to be one digit apart. My guess is that the L34 part and other V8 covers from the same period are identical.

Are the two timing marks there due to the dual points?

But not in the same sense as an aftermarket dual point distributor. Think of it as two completely separate ignition systems. Each one runs four cylinders. It is why the plug lead sequence at the cap is 1,5,7,3,4,2,6,8 rather than the standard 1,2,7,8,4,5,6,3.

The timing cover is early style, correct for your LH. Seen many and getting hard to get now without bad corrosion.
Balancer = super rare

Just getting back to rare bits for a moment Robbie, don't go swapping your gearbox crossmember. And don't worry about posting any photos of it on here.

Not changing or replacing anything Shiney, never have, but thanks for the heads up. Just a clean-up is all I will be doing. Will send you a pm of it when I get a photo.

Send me a message about what makes it different.
