Seeking advice on VIN tag. Several years ago the I/D plates were stolen from my L34. On another occasion my house was broken into and my original log book stolen. After three years I was given info on who had stolen the items and it was someone known to me. Police made a visit and got the plates back minus the VIN tag (long skinny one). The person admitted to having the log book but had it with other persons known to them and promised to return it. This never happened.

I am now restoring the Torana so the missing VIN plate is an issue to me. I had no registration records to ascertain the VIN number as it's been garaged since '89.

My question is, can a VIN plate be reissued by GMH or others to replicate the stolen one?

I have used the info from this site (so much info it's great) and coupled it with the identifiers that still exist with the car to come up with what I think the original VIN was.

8D69ZDJ445573H

I punched this number into the VIN identifier but it doesn't recognize it. Wonder if other L34 owners have the same problem.

I've also included what I think the VIN would be just in case it's currently floating around on another vehicle. I do know the thief was asking about how much they could get for the plates on the black market for a rebirth. They just asked the wrong person who, unknown to them, happened to be a mate of mine.

G'day Rob,

Sorry to hear that mate, it must annoy the hell out of you knowing that someone you trusted and allowed into your house turns around and does that crap.

Being dealt with by the police would have been the lucky optrion for them, I'm sure you could have thought of a thousand ways to deal with them.

As for the VIN, are sure you have it correct. Z is definately L34 and the 8D69 part is also correct as is the D for the year.

My 9/77 hatch is J5 followed by the Body Number not the Chasis Number but I can't recall if J5 is for the Dandenong Plant or not, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Thanks for the feedback Mark. I have used the chassis number stamped on the car. From my understanding that's how it works for the '74 models. Also the VIN identifier doesn't recognize the Z. Comes up as unknown.

Disregard the PM I sent earlier. it doesn't matter now. The VIN tag will be 8D69ZDJ4 plus the Body No. on the body tag.

Mark, the J5 is Assembly Plant (Dandenong) and Production Line.

My bad Laurie. I did use the body number from the tag and not the chassis number. Incidentally the chassis number does match the other tag and it's an 8/74 build. Brain fade, it happens. Given that do you think I've got the VIN correct and is there anyway of having a tag reissued?

Cheers

Nope

All gone

No chance of getting a proper replacement

Best you could hope for is to stick the other 2 in a safe place and have an engraver make you 3 matching new ones (that won't look like the originals)

That VIN would make it one of the last ones. I don't have that many records, but it is the highest number I have seen yet.

Just got the letter of authenticity back from GMH. Not proof of anything but it did show the production date of mine was 27/8/74. Would love to know how to find out if it was the last L34 or not.

The letter did also quote my engine number correctly. I didn't provide it to them. who are HHS? If they are the same mob with the VIN search facility I don't know if they would. When I punched my number in it didn't recognize it all.

Yeah Holden also had my engine number as well. HHS may just possibly have some extra data.

Looks good Brad.

The one from GMH came back including the following details. From phone call to the to return of the certificate took only an hour. Really impressed.

ENGINE:    308 ci (5047cc) Prefix Z (Variant Two) L34

TRANSMISSION:   2.54:1 4 Speed Manual (308-Variant Two) M21

PRODUCTION DATE:  27/08/1974

I was chuffed to see the 'variant two' included to recognize the L34 engine and fine spline M21.

2.54 1st gear = 2.78 diff ratio.
