The BJR entry #75 of Ash Walsh & Tim Slade was excluded from yesterday's Sandown 500 because of the time the drivers spent behind the wheel.

Even during the race the officials had trouble interpreting the rules, so they waited until after the race to sort out the confusion. This in itself means that the rules are ambiguous, to me anyway.

See:- http://www.speedcafe...ed-sandown-500/

The rules are very confusing & keep referring to the "scheduled race distance" which was 500 km or 161 laps. Since the race was shortened to less than 400 km how is Walsh meant to get his "minimum rest number of laps" ? 1/3 of 161 laps is 53 or 54 laps so had the race gone full distance, he would have.

Also 2/3 of 161 is around 107 or 108 laps, Walsh did less than that.

Neither driver exceeded the 2/3 distance either.

Does anybody else think that this fair ?

Dr Terry

I agree, the rules are confusing if the officials who are tasked to enforce them have difficulty interpreting them.

About time they updated those rules so the shortened race distance, either by the revised number of laps or by the time constraint, automatically takes precedence over the scheduled race distance.

The amount of time that Walsh spent behind the wheel is not the issue, it was because Slade did not do the minimum of 54 laps at the wheel and Walsh did not rest for a minimum 54 laps or I/3 of the scheduled race distance.

All the other teams were able to comply with the rules. BJR's pit stop strategy is what tripped them up. Brad Jones got it wrong.

I don't like to see any team entry disqualified or excluded, but that is motor racing.

Hi Dr Terry,

Its definately confusing, as usually in shortened races the minimum laps required by a co driver also changes, i  thought  the old 1/3  2/3  rule always applied

what would have happened if the race got shortened after they made the driver change??

I'm not their biggest fan, but I feel for BJR. It was a horror weekend for them. The rules don't work. If there was another safety car or two then none of the drivers would have been able to comply.

Kudos to Skaife and everyone else (Dencar?) who designed the chassis for COTF. To have Todd Hazelwood walk away from that, and then jump in another car 40 minutes later and finish third is quite incredible.

The BJR chassis is stuffed.

I reckon you could say the same for Jason Havasmash Gomersall's Torana as well.

yes for Hazlewood to walk away from that is mind blowing, i have seen a lot of crashes over the years and i was expecting them to have to almost cut him out of the car  unconscious  and with many broken bones, i almost couldnt believe it when isaw him get out under his own steam..

certainly says a lot about how safe the cars are.

I heard a rumour that gommersils car is a genuine A9X  does anyone know if this is the case or not?

I saw the headline for an article talking about his new "A9X". I thought that was just what they were calling it.

He certainly doesn't mind referring to it as an A9X.

At Clipsal 500 I had a look around the TCM pits and checked out most of the cars. Certainly no genuine GT, GTHO, A9X, L34, E37 etc bodies used according to the plates.

One torana was SLR but was 202 or 253.

The commentators will sometimes refer to them being genuine.

I remember not very long ago, they were referring to Leanne Tander's XA 4-door as a Phase 4. FFS  !!
