Hi all,

Sorry if this has been discussed before Iv had a look around but can't really find the answer

2. Can you tell what the torana is by only the chassis number

Any help appreciated

Given the full chassis number we may be able to *guess* the compliance date as it relates to other cars around it, but that's about it for the details. If you're trying to find out what the model / paint / options / etc. were your only chance may be to contact Holden Historical Services...

...but unless you have at least the original engine number you may still have no luck?

I'm pretty sure VIC is the same as NSW in that you can register a car without a compliance plate so long as it's been registered previously in Australia. With any luck the chassis number might yield some previous registration details when they punch it into their computer?

EDIT:

"CLX" chassis numbers started 01/77 and ran until 12/77, after that the "DLX" chassis numbers ran a few months into 1978 until the UC Torana was released.

So I certainly wouldn't say yours was 'one of the last' by any means.

AFAIK DLX began 1/2/78. I've noted several CLX with Jan 78 compliance dates.

One of the identifiers for DLX LX Toranas is the change in ignition barrels. The DLX version have the black ignition barrel with the single lug (or ear) as you see in Commodores etc. The earlier cars (CLX etc.) have the silver barrel with 2 lugs.
