Here's what the editor of Performance Drive has to say about the demise of car manufacturing in Australia.

Awesome pics. And gone are the days of good old fashioned driveway service with tyres, oil and water checked adjacent to petrol pumps bearing names like Total, Esso, Ampol, Golden Fleece.

How were the days when society was sensible and civil.

Fairly balanced view.
Every writers view is influenced by thier political leanings.
Doesnt matter f.a. in the end...all the manufacturers are now gone.
Bloody sad really.
Lets just hope Aus can flourish as the worlds best provider of
Courier drivers for Ebay and Amazon,
VIP lawn mowing franchises and Coffee shops on every corner.

What a balls up

One sided free trade agreements continue to kill any hope of car manufacturing ever surviving here.

We have free trade on vehicles with Thailand.

But Thai government put a massive tax on road registering a vehicle manufactured outside their country. So great, you can buy and import a vehicle with no tarrifs, that's the free trade part, but then it's essentially impossible to register it for road use there.

Yet we let them stream in here (Toyota, Mazda, Isuzu, Honda etc) with nothing.

It's not only Thailand, many countries do this, they protect their manufacturing industry, we don't give a shit about ours and just let them roll in, unless they're the expensive cars that incur a luxury tax.

Luxury tax also applies to the domestic product.

Here's another Holden product that I know you will appreciate John.

Yes, & I believe that they also heavily tax cars over a certain engine capacity, not sure if it's 2.5 or 3.0 litres.
