Is there any difference between an M40 trimatic originally bolted up to a 6 cylinder compared with one bolted up to an 8 cylinder?

Internally are they the same? Is a 8 cyl trimatic stronger than a 6?

Bellhousings would be different obviously, are these interchangeable like the M20/21 gearboxes?

4 ,6 253 and 308 all run different # of internal clutches

So yes the 308 is tougher than the other boxes

Ah ok, thanks Neil.

Can a 6cyl trimatic be built will the correct # of internal clutches to suit a 8cyl?

Or do you need to locate an 8cyl box to begin with?

Yes you can put a 6cyl trans behind a V8. Years ago when I worked in a trans shop we would keep rebuilt transmission on the shelf for change overs, all we would do is swap over the bell housings to suit. If driven like a everyday road car they would last a long long time (past the warranty period anyway). :D

Like Dattoman said the only difference is the number of friction plates between the 6 & 8 cyls which from memory is 2 in each clutch pack, also the spacer thickness to allow the extra plates.

All other internals are the same such as input / output shafts, gearsets and band.

Torque converter size is different also.
