I have managed to contact the original owner of my car. I have noted some previous discussions about aerial locations on L34's. I have a photo of the car from the original owner and it shows an aerial on the right rear guard. Was this where dealers fitted them?

I just noticed - no badges on the front guards.

Pretty sure the dealers would have put them on the LHF guard as with other models.

Putting it on the rear would have been a whole heap more work and an extension needed for the aerial lead.

My first HQ SS had the aerial mounted in a similar position but a little higher up the guard closer to the back window.

Yep, that's the spot for electric aerial.

I thought the L34 wasn't optioned with a radio?

If so, it could have been fitted by anyone.

Aerials in rear 1/4's was common back in the day.

Yes I have seen them mounted on both the front and rear guards. I would say most were fitted aftermarket though and it was simply a preference as to where the owner wanted it located.

Mine was fitted in the rear left hand top of the guard.

May have been long and ugly but remember once you left the city fringes the radio reception was fairly crappy. I had a long aerial because I did a lot of Interstate driving and it was the only way to get any radio reception on the Sydney/Melbourne trips or Melbourne/ Bathurst roads via the back way trips.

I thought the L34 wasn't optioned with a radio?

Dr Terry believes that no LH left the factory with a radio fitted. Even though it was optioned when the car was ordered, it was always a dealer fitted option. It was never on the broadcast sheet and there is not a separate part number for the lower dash without the coin tray.

Mine was fitted by United Motors in the traditional spot on left front guard as I requested a radio to be fitted

Going out on a limb here...but back in the day I think some installers had the idea that the further the aeriel was fitted ..away from the engine..the less chance of "noise" ( think points sparking) from the engine being a problem with the radio quality . Maybe L34s with dual points made this theory even more relevant
