Hi guys,

I'm about to pick up a shell and start my first restoration.

I just want to ask what the procedure is once the build is done to get it registered (It'll be a few years until it's done)

I know about Blue Slips etc, but he car also has a bit of history.

See below

I HAVE FOR SALE 1 LC 2 DOOR TORANA ROLLING SHELL,

WAS STOLEN RECOVERED BACK IN THE 80'S SO IT DOESNT HAVE THE ORIGINAL VIN PLATES (HAS BEEN REGISTERED SINCE) WAS TOLD FROM PREVIOUS OWNER THAT IT WAS A GTR (IT HAS THE PRESSED FLUTES IN FRONT GUARDS WHICH SUPPORTS THAT AND GTR FRONT END)

COMES WITH A FULL SET OF TAGS OFF ANOTHER LC TORANA

WAS LAST REGISTERED WITH A V8 IN IT (I HAVE THE ORIGINAL REGO PAPERS)

Will it be an issue when I go to get it registered???

My Green car didn't have any tags on it when purchased.

And at that time the RTA as it was known in those days said as long as the body number appeared intact [ not tampered with ] and vehicle was over ten years old it was not a problem for rego..

Thanks mate.

Is there a way to check whether the car is a GTR, as he mentioned, just by using the body number?

Dont bother with the other set of tags.

If they go on the car you will be in a world of poo.

Mount them and hang them up in the shed

Destroy the other tags. Using them is illegal and automatic world of hurt.

Should have no dramas registering the car with no tags.

Got pics of engine bay matt.

You can check along top of front fenders to
See if the spot welds have not been tampered
with etc or any evidence that the guard has
been put on..

& evidence of a pivot bracket for the throttle seems it's apparently a lc gtr.

As a general rule this is correct but there are some exceptions. Obviously some people will cut the second bracket off when trying to replicate a GTR or GTR XU-1. However I have seen two door S models and four door LJ's (granny specials unmolested) with only one spare wheel bracket. I have been told that this happened when the car was a factory 4 speed manual because the floor pans were the same part as was used in GTR's. I haven't checked the parts catalogue to confirm or disprove the theory though.

So in summary having one spare wheel bracket may be an indication of being a GTR but it's no guarantee.

James, AFAIK it was because the car was optioned with the 5.5" rims. In the case of the 1973 LJ's  the 5.5" rims and disc brakes were mandatory with the 3300 engine option.

The floor pan assy used in the 82911 model is the same floor pan as used in all RHD LJ Torana (excl 1600 eng) with 'console shift', which means Auto & Manual.

Not yet. I am going to see the car this week.

He said that is does still have the welds in place

I'll check.

I think I remember what this looks like from my old GTR..

Looking at this pic it shows a 1973 ADR 10b type rad support panel and apron panel. Highly likely one or both fenders and nose cone have been replaced also.

Sloppy cutting and welding of fender to RH wheelhouse panel in headlamp opening also.

Hi Dave,
The 5.5" wheel option sounds fair enough but the granny spec 4 door I referred to was fitted with 4.5" rims.

If that shell was a lc "gtr" not an xu1, it should also have evidence of a few badge holes under the rear windows either holes still there or weld marks inside or bog worms poking through the holes inside, an s will have it inside the middle of the c pillar. If it was an xu1 then the differences will be in the boot mainly. Look for poor prep on the primer ect, usually a guide on the quality of the workmanship of the repairer, Gary.

Don't bother fussing if it was or was not a GTR, makes no difference to its value now.
The most important thing to get if you buy it is the old rego showing the body number and V8. Will make re reg with V8 straightforward. Will need re engineering otherwise.

It comes with the papers from when it was last registered and it shows it had a V8.

I’ll just make sure the body number matches.

I was going to put a 6 in it but if it is still easy to register it with a V8, as it has been before, I’ll drop a V8 in

Wouldn’t it need to be re-engineered seeing as it has been off the road for a long time?

Hi guys. I was sent some engine bay photo's today.

What are your thoughts?

It worries me that you can't make out the body number and it has no tags. Will this bone me when it comes to re-registering it?

Someone went to great lenghts to try to hide that body number at some stage.

I would walk away.

Sadly a Revs check wont help you here, there is a chance you will pour heaps of hard earned into it and if it turns out to be stolen the person it was stolen from may be liable to take the car when you go to register it.

Cheers.

The number in the last photo matches the rego papers though?

Looks like it was covered in primer like the rest of the car

If I take it I was thinking I'll get him to sign a receipt stating that he sold me the car, the amount I paid, as well as all the info I can get off the car as well as take a copy of his drivers licence.
