I removed the engine and gearbox, after replacing them back in the car the tail shaft uni joint won't line up to the diff. The uni joint seats on the right side yet the left side is around 4 mm from seating. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Shayne

G'day Shayne,

I'm a little unclear on what problem you're having, I assume you mean the uni joint now seems too wide for the diff yoke?

If that's the case, and all the same components that came out are going back in, you almost certainly have a needle roller out of position in the bearing cup? You would need to slide the cups off the uni, repack the needle rollers in grease and carefully slide them back on.

While you're in there, inspect the running surfaces of the rollers, trunnion and cup... basically if there are any marks/pits/chattering/whatever on the case hardened surfaces then you should be replacing the joint. Likewise if there is any movement/slop in the joint once assembled.

The reason I mention this is that the rollers in a new uni joint usually pack in pretty tight even without grease, they don't normally move around unless there's a little wear 'n tear?

Hey bigfella, it's seating it in the diff the uni joint seats fine on one side but will not seat on the other. Did all the roller checks before and all good there. Caps line up fine just won't seat in the diff

So are you saying the tailshaft won't slide backwards far enough? Or that one of the cups seems to be too big in diameter for the yoke?

Sorry I don't understand exactly what's not lining up? Is there any way you can post up some pics of the problem?

Photos are a challenge to put on the post. I put one end of the shaft into the GB the other onto the diff end I then fitted UJ in the seat on the diff and bolted it in with the u bolt and it seated flush with the diff. I tried bolting the other side but no matter how much I tried it would not seat flush. Had a 4mm gap from the UJ to the diff seat

Maybe one of the roller bearings in the cap has fallen out of place and your cup is sitting further out of the uni and causing the C-clip on the cup to foul on the pinion.

The rollers are all sweet, I thought I might have put the gearbox bracket on backwards offsetting it to the diff

Put both ubolts in. Nip one side up by hands spin the wheels to rotate the tail shafts 180. Then nip up the otherside. If it seats tighten them diagonally top one side botTom the other etc.
Just a maybe?

also check that the uni cup is full centred there is sometimes a barely noticable lip that the uni cup sits inside of,  also i would fit both sides up and tighten u bolts evenly to avoid it being pulled out of centre
