hoping for help in how to take remove a rear shock on my lx.

pretty rusted on so am going to soak,

but i can't work out how to undo the nuts, as they just spin with the "rod",

and

rod is barely protruding so cannot get purchase on it.

and cant work out how to undo nuts even if did get purchase, due to it being in an enclosed space.

for all those questions.. the only solution have so far come with is angle grind the frOcker in half (underneath) and that will free the "rod" to pull up/out

suspect is not the correct procedure.

any thoughts would be much appreciated

Looks like there are two nuts on the shaft. Someone has installed a locknut to ensure it will not come loose?

The end of the shaft has two flats so you can hold the shaft with a spanner to stop it turning whilst you undo the nut.

A bent open end spanner to get on the bottom nut and a socket to undo the top nut?

cheers dave, time to bend a spanner as you recommend.

but the flats at top are a problem as is only about 2-3mm exposed, not getting enough purchase on.

will try again when had more of a soak to loosen

definitely looks like 2 nuts   hold bottom nut and turn top nut to loosen then hopefully top nut will come off  then there will be enough shaft sticking through to hold while loosening bottom nut.

get penetrene or inox  both of which work better than wd40 for loosening rusted bolts

if nothing flammable around a small gas blow torch and heat the nuts as well will help but most likely there is rubber bushed under nuts

or there is always these

Will hold bottom one with the bent spanner and try to get top one off, so can then have the top to hold rod.. goodness willing
(Need to buy inox one day)

Never seen that tool before!
Won't work in this case, due to the stupid enclosure Holden made around mounting area.. but might time in handy in future

If you are taking them out to put new ones in. Just hold the shaft from the other side with vise grips etc. Then undo..
Do NOT do this if u r reusing them as it will scratch and damage the shaft most likely

heya jas, the shaft (lower section) is not exposed to grab, as is enclosed in the shock "casing".

will buy some shocks and take apart and let know of results

Can you get an assistant to hold the upper casing of the shocker in the wheelhouse whilst you undo the nuts at the top?

I can't remember how exactly but I stopped the upper casing of the shock from turning as jason suggested and used a socket.

Edit.

I remember now, I used the Stilsons wedged in the wheel well. lol.

Kinchrome do a crow foot wrench set, Rachet driven in imperial I'm sure, they were just in a tool catalogue it's like the open end of a spanner & has a square drive to suit either 3/8" or 1/2" the part number for the "metric" version is KO3008 they also have ratcheting open end spanners & there new lok on socket series, all in the current catalogue, fakebook, twitter or www.kinchrome.com.au Gary.
