Hi

I put electronic ignition in over a year ago into a 253 Torana and the Tacho read fine and true.I recently had the motor out and the gauges freshened up by classic gauge. Now when i turn the key on the tacho goes to 1000 rpm sometimes without the motor running and when travelling its all over the place.I labeled all the wires i took off.Has anyone had this experience.Any suggestions or help appreciated

Thanks

Hi Bradley

Every now and then mine does the same thing, but the problem I currently have is since I painted the needles the tach reads about 500 rpm too low. I think the next time I remove the cluster I will take to someone like Humphries instrument people to repair or service.

The weight of the extra paint on the Tacho pointer will cause this.

The remedy is to re-balance the Tacho movement.  This is NOT a job for the inexperienced, it's a very delicate procedure and needs to be done under certain conditions, like a space with no breeze or air motion.

After balancing is done, the Tacho must be re-calibrated.

Have you asked the repairer about this..?

Ensure he has re-balanced the Tacho movement correctly.

Part of the re-balancing process is to back off the hair spring tension to the movement BEFORE the balancing can be done.

If he has done this, but forgot to re-set the hair spring tension after balancing, or didn't re-calibrate after balancing, that could possibly be the cause.

He said send it back but that means taking out of the car and sending over East again.I cant see the paint making the kind of difference it does.If i turn the key on but dont start the motor it goes up.Then you will be sitting at the lights and its on 7000 rpm.

What you're experiencing now could be just that the hair spring wasn't re-tensioned, not so much the paint on the pointer.
