Hi all, just bought our LJ and getting a few things sorted for a RWC, and then on to club reg here in Vic. One of the things i needed to do was change both speedo gears, after removing and reinstalling the gearbox extension housing the speedo now works fine but the gears are very hard to select. Prior to this job they were fine. Only thing i can think of that is now different is new oil. I filled it with 80/90 as per recommendation but think i remember from years ago we used to run ATF 50/50 in these things. Could that be it? Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Gary

Stick to correct gear oil, don't do the ATF mix.

Check you haven't somehow disturbed the reverse linkage and its half engaged ....

Check clutch linkage adjustment. I know you probably didnt touch it while doing your

speedo gears but coincidences happen.

Thanks for the help Fuzzy, but no luck. I checked the reverse gear adjustment and its definitely disengaged. As you said clutch din't get touched but checked it anyway and it seems fine. Has me stumped, as far as i know when reinstalling the rear extension housing you only have to get the selector to engage the reverse gear, which it does. It drove perfectly the previous day so stuffed if i know.

They can be a bit stiff until they are warmed up.

Is it still rat trap? Did you undo the crossmember to change the gears?

If so, you might have upset the clutch adjustment.

Time to start disconnecting shifter and linkages and do some testing to determine where the problem is.

Yes Rob, if rat trap is original clutch setup that is what it is running. Why would removing crossmember upset clutch adjustment? thought maybe i had put crossmember back incorrectly but no such luck.

Dave, i have tried removing reverse linkage as that was the only one removed during the work but that didn't help.

Getting very frustrated now, after a week straight of work i think i have it ready to go in for a RWC but i cant drive it there. :-(

Thanks for the help guys but i think it's sorted, started again. Pulled oil drain plug and was maybe 50ml overfull, readjusted clutch again, re adjusted reverse linkage by 1 turn. Put together and drives fine again???????
