I think CAMS were allowing for any variance in the manufacturing process by adding in the extra inch. In the 1980s, this variance was down to +/- 1.00mm. However as Bruce Nowaki pointed out to me when I bought the spare Grice VL, the person (from Holden) responsible for filling out the homologation paperwork for CAMS changed the decimal point one place to the right and nobody from CAMS noticed. When you measure the front and rear inner guards on my GMP&A VL compared to a standard one they are 10mm wider.
