It’s more so the vinyl shrinks. Say leave a piece of pvc tape out in the sun and watch it shrivel up.

I can't say I've ever taken much notice but I assume the factory decals were simply applied OVER the finished paint?

I have 3 original sports steering wheels & they're either bent or broken so I decided to have a crack at repairing the inherent problem..
Removing the grip reveals a typical break at 9 & 3 o'clock spoke ring.

Welded the 3 spokes, sandblasted & bend the ring back to flat & round.

Painted & ready to glue the grip back on.

Just used a retractable box cutter knife.
