I have a spare rebuilt Aussie gearbox, dated G23 1 for July 23rd 1971. It has a Holden 899 cluster gear and 544 input shaft.

Would this be date correct for a CK XU-1? Also the input shaft, although genuine Holden, has no grooves instead of the two grooves it's supposed to have.

Is this an early M20 thing or a replacement Nasco shaft?

Cheers Kev

Hi

Both of those number check out as XU-1 parts in the LC and LJ catalogues - so it would appear to be for the CK. Probably too early for the first of the LJ XU-1s.

The business about the number of grooves has been pretty much discredited as the sole method of establishing whether a box is XU-1 or not.

Cheers

Hi all,

Sorry for thread steal, a bit. ....but can we source those 899 clusters anywhere these days?...I've tried a few places without luck.

p..s I'm steering clear of the place in Sydney that has been recently discussed.

Thanks.

These guys used to stock the replacement clusters and input shafts, I see the clusters aren't on there website anymore, might be worth checking with them?

J & VR still advertise XU ratio box's on ebay. They helped me out with a replacement XU input & a couple other gears recently.

Give John a try if you havn't already.

While I'm here, I'm looking at rebuild kits & am considering 1 from Ebayer "earlybitz1".

Was wondering what peoples thoughts are on the Non-sealed front bearing?

l had always thought that xu1 gearbox's could be quickly identified by the 2 groves  on the input shaft .  Then a couple of months ago l was sorting out a pile of junk in my shed and came across an aussie 4 speed that l couldn't remember where l got it from  . Has  XU1 stamped in  paint on the box but the cluster  had no rings on it .  Then it  hit me that  it was actually  the original gearbox l had removed from my ck xu1 approx. 25 years previously  when it had started jumping out of 3rd gear .  l had replaced it with a box l had  rebuilt    using parts from 2 m21  gearboxes to  do so and  ck box had just been put to one side ................am probably bloody lucky that this rare piece of the cars originality   did not go astray as l have been through about 10 house/farm shifts plus have moved from one end of the country to the other in all this time .

Just out of interest, can anyone confirm the tooth count on the 2823544 Input Shaft & the forward-most (driven) cog on the 2823899 cluster?

My notes have them at 25 teeth & 19 teeth respectively but I just wanted to confirm?

EDIT: It would also be set out in the CAMS homologation docs for the XU-1 if anyone has the page handy?

EDIT AGAIN: Never mind, located a scan of the homologation docs (CAMS H2-3) here:

http://www.gmh-toran...-10#entry243610

And it confirms my notes of 25 & 19 teeth respectively.
