Hi all,

So I can't seem to diagnose an issue that I have. The dash lights come on as soon as the battery is connected. I'm guessing it's a short somewhere. I've tried a different ignition switch and it still does it. Any ideas?

Cheers

Dave

Also when I crank the ignition the engine turns over but the coil gets really hot and the plugs aren't sparking.

It's a process of elimination. With the battery connected, unplug the electrical connector from the ignition switch, if the ign stays on then it wasn't that.

Next I'd probably disconnect the positive wire from the ign coil, at least that should prevent it getting hot while you test other things.

If that still doesn't work, try removing fuses from the fuse box one by one, if one of them turns off the ign then at least you know what circuit is supplying the short.

Which dash lights?

The reds?

Or the illumination?

Have you just connected the wires, or is it a new problem in a car that was working okay previously?

If it has happened after recently connecting wiring, check the back of the fuse box and make sure the connectors are where they should be.

Had a problem similar years ago. The main plug feeding the fuse box wasnt in quite the right spot.

What caused the constant power to the coil?

Things like this can be important to others finding the same faults.
