Can insure a $400k house for less.
I've found that choice of repairer is pretty much a given with any insurer.

Well of course you can Tony but theres is millions of houses
Not XU1s
You are paying for the privalige to own and drive these cars
And not all insurance companies let you choose your own repairer thats why there is designated repairers for some

I myself would want an owner-repaired option, that way you get the cheque and you get to do what you want with the car. Fix it yourself, take it to your own panel guy (even if he refuses to work for your insurance company), or just let it sit in your shed and tinker with it for the next ten years.

Some here have shown they'd be more than capable of fixing just about anything, and would probably do a better job than a panel shop apprentice on a time clock.

Also I would absolutely want first right of refusal on the written-off wreck, if you have a hundred grand worth of fancy parts in your car (assuming they weren't removed or damaged) you could buy them back cheap for another project.

Sometimes, in the event of hail damage for instance, the car may be essentially intact but still classified as a write-off, and I would definitely want it back.

Yes, that’s good advice. I’ll have to actually read the huge PDS that is sent out from potential insurers when making the change.

Cheers,

Liz :)

Good advice Big Fella, never really thought about an owner repaired option but it makes sense.

If you do a bit of a family tree you will find that there aren't many independant insurers and most roll up to a parent, and Suncorp are the parent of a lot of them, Shannons included if I am correct. To date Shannons have appeared (to my view at least) to be somewhat independant in terms of pricing and valuation but the best thing I like is the fact that we have an agreed value and in a write-off I can get the car back.  Cheers Ron

I'm sure most if not all insurance companies will allow you to use your preferred repairer instead of theirs however you may have to pay the difference if the price is higher and the insurer will not give you the lifetime guarantee on the repairs.

Bear in mind that not all repairers will work for all insurance companies either.

When my old man had the panel shop years ago he refused to have anything to do with NRMA as they, at that time at least, used to screw the crap out of panel shops, as well as 'adjusting' quotes after work commenced, taking months to pay, not paying for secondary towing and storage, and so on.

I can only imagine what it's like to be an insurance repairer in today's world and wouldn't blame anyone for doing private jobs only.

Shannons happily offered me a cash settlement when I had a very minor shunt in my BMW. Got $4k and I fixed it myself. Cost me about $200 from memory.
