(Hi All, Sorry I haven’t posted anything so these questions can be my first.)  I have a EH Holden Sedan that have been researching information on as I am about to start working on this car first. Sorry guys the LJ will have to wait.  My questions are related to turbo and supercharging 186 to 202 Holden engines. I have found some information on the Torana forum about this but it was an old thread.

Q1 - Can anyone tell me if they have made their own kits for turbo?

Q2 - Like intake and exhaust manifolds?

Q3 - What carbies that have used?

Q4 - What EFI system has been used?

Q5 - What Ignition systems are available like MSD?

Q6 - What Compression ratios work best without detonation?

Q7 - Has anyone used Forged pistons?

Q8 - Has anyone used the forged Conrods that are available?

Thanks in advance, Trevor

1: yep
2: Stock blue motor intake and exhaust

3: 500 holley

4: VK efi would work fine to

5: Stock is fine, any msd will be fine. If going efi then just ge the computer to do it.

6:How long is a piece of string? Depends on your cam, how much boost you are running, what fuel you are running. I had 12 psi on 9:1, stock blue motor cam with 98 octane, could have taken more boost or compression.

7: not in this engine but JE slugs are cheap and easy to get.

8: Spool rods are cheap and easy to get, work fine.

Like anything there are a million ways to skin a cat. Above is how I did it quickly and nastily for shits and giggles, and not how I would do it a second time around with a higher budget. Basic principles of turbocharging any engine, as well as building any high performance engine apply to a holden six.

Cheers.

Thanks Bomber Watson, That has given me some more food for thought. Just a quick explanation on what you would do on a higher budget.

Cheers Trevor

I did 2 back around 1979

SS Hatch with 202, bought manifolds ( still in shed some where) Rymec I think

used decompression plate, motor standard parts

CD 175 carby draw through.

stock ignition

the other in race boat

186 with 202 pistons to drop comp (bored 179 block, still in shed also)

standard inlet, modded exhaust manifold to bolt on turbo

45 mm weber draw through

stock ignition

both motors were balanced by Repco workshop

both went very well

What is your end goal?

I kinda hinted that there are a million and five ways to do it.

I would personally not consider draw through as an option, but anything else is possible.

What do you want? 9 port head, 12 port head, jz head? Stock manis with a J pipe, log manifold, tube manifold? Carby or EFI, aftermarket or factory...

What fuel do you want to run? 91? 95? 98? E85?

How much power do you want to make? When do you want the boost to come on? When do you want to boost to peter out? What rpm do you want to rev it to?

How much do you want to spend?

Be honest with the above answers and I might e able to help.

7.5.1 c/r if you use a carby they are set the same for off and on boost.they work on load so small cam tall diff gears, must use water injection or nulon prostrenght octane booster,if you want to is to go e85 if its available in your area.

Yeah and now days a 3 door shopping trolley you can buy brand new for 3 months wages makes more hp per ci than the fastest production cars around in the 70's.

Technology has changed a lot and most of it filters back to our old dinosaurs, Why you would still frOck around with prehistoric ideas like 7.5:1 compression and water injection is absolutely beyond me. Hell even the "gotta use a small cam" idea was blown out of the water 30 years ago.
