Hello Fellow Torana Nuts, I purchased a 253 WB 4 Speed and was told it had a gearbox issue. I changed the normal parts but it had the same noise as the old parts. Whilst changing these parts I noticed a cut in the crank shaft were the flex plate bolts onto ??. I am no mechanic just thought it was suspect. I removed the dust cover and noticed a small wobble in the clutch and pressure plate. Now I am wondering if the knocking noise is because its not meant to be like that. If its not the way it should be, why would someone do this ? If I template and cut the other side will this balance up and problem solved ?               Thanks in advance for your advice.        Have added a pic to look at :(.

It looks the same as the stock crank I have laying around.

Where the blue paint is, that's the edge of the crank and the shiny part looks to have been broken or cut. Should that end parr of the crank be round ?

Please describe the noise that you have been hearing, that you were led to believe was a gearbox noise... this may serve to be a better question to answer than the crank flange analysis IMHO.

Kind regards

It makes a knocking noise and its very noticeable. Depress clutch and it goes away. I removed the cable from clutch fork and bearing wasn't touching the fingers and still knocking ? thanks

How much end-float do you have in the crankshaft? Depressing the clutch also pushes the crank forward and can mask a thrust bearing problem.

You have a normal crankshaft. That is how they are made.

Thanks Guy's :), done a bit of research and found there were more like mine ?. Must have been a bad batch lol. Cheers for your help. I sent a mate out earlier to purchase a replacement gearbox. This one doesn't have the bearing shaft/ broken gear noise. Not really sure but will pull this one apart for a look.some time next year. So my old girl has been teaching me how to fix things. Left bellhousing in and it was easy this time :). Thanks Again

PS    Yes I feel like a tool. If you havnt used the bread and bolt to remove pinion bush, should pull out the old syncro and give it a go :).

Wobble in the clutch and pressure plate?
Can you move it by hand or see it move when someone activates the clutch?
Either something is loose like your flywheel or pressure plate or less likely your flywheel is not machined true.

Many years ago I had a flywheel resurfaced by ABS. When reassembled the car had a bad shake at the same RPM in every gear. When inspected the flywheel had a marked slant of the surface! Never went there again.

Hey Rexy, Thanks for the info. since putting the second hand box in it seems good to the ear. Its a small wobble, maybe 1mm to the eye. I replaced the inspection plate gasket after I installed it. Wasn't expecting spinning things and took a bit to work out. You get to know your car better when looking from a different angle. Thanks Guys

PS   whats the best thing to get gearbox oil out from upper torso lol.
