G'day Tony, are you sure about the exact number? The prefix and the zero looks a bit strange, maybe an error on old rego papers or something?

I'd guess the stamped number would have actually been HT14284 which would make it a June '74 cast block (likely in a 07/74 LH Torana)?

Other than blind luck, are you able to track down any previous owners and ask where the engine may have ended up? If it was exchanged for a reco like GEM Engines it could be anywhere by now, but if 'sold to a mate' you might be able to find the mate, and so on.

Not sure if there's any way to run a search with the RTA? Even if they could tell you if it's still in a registered vehicle that might be a start.

Good luck with your search!

the actual number was taken from the letter that holden send you when verifying your car details

and yes the car is a 6/74 build

i was told from a previous owner the engine is in a Holden 1 tonner somewhere up the North coast

i will keep searching

Andrew is correct. The actual number stamped on the block will be HT14284.

The 0 between the T and the 1 is only there on paper because the GMH customer service officer who compiled the info in the letter for your car has copied the number exactly as it is recorded in the Vehicle Master listing.

The 0 is only recorded because your engine number is 5 digits but the computer required 6 digits to be entered.

If your engine number was only 4 digits long eg: T1234, then it would be recorded on the Vehicle Master Listing as T001234

When I first saw the "T" I immediately thought it might have been an Aussie 3/4 speed transmission serial number, but such a low number would make it a 1969 gearbox, so 5 years too old for this Torana.

I don't think the trans serial number appears on any of the service records does it?

You are ostensibly correct for the manual transmissions Andrew. So far I've only found one Aussie 4 spd Serial number recorded in the LC, LJ Vehicle Master Listings.

I hope you two sit down together one day and write down everything you know into some sort of Torana bible. Not taking away anything from Norm's book, but there is sooo much more to learn.
