I’m building a Holden V8 for a LC conversion.
The brake booster is XU1 dual diaphragm type.

I was planning to use HQ engine mounts.
The question is, without moving the brake booster, how much rocker cover clearance is there?
The aftermarket covers I was planning to fit are squarer and taller than a std cover.
I have both options and don’t need the additional rocker clearance, it’s just the originals will require some love and attention before I can use them.

I have seen lots of photos, but it’s hard to know what mounts have been used, and if the booster has been moved.

Can't see booster little chance of clearance unless custom brackets that move closer to bonnet hinge or chopping chunk out of rocker cover which looks weird.

Other option is spacers to drop crossmember...think lj355 did his that way the first time...I did ford m/cyl no booster which was fine for manual car but horrid if auto.

Assuming it's efi heads you're talking about although non-efi heads are an easier fit.

I’m doing a non efi conversion.
I’ve seen plenty of pictures, some with the bigger booster, but you can’t see what has been done or how much clearance there is.
I’m under the impression with hq mounts the std covers will fit. I’m just not sure how much room there is.

Yeah it's tight even with stocker tin covers...usually fit engine then booster & to adjust rockers booster off again.

Place in Sydney (Burt Bros?) said years ago they modified or made booster brackets to sit inch or so closer to bonnet hinge.

Not sure what m/cyl & booster is in that second pic.

I was planning on removing the k-frame and installing the engine and gearbox from underneath in one go.
The covers in the second picture are the same aftermarket ones I have.
The problem is you never know what people have done to make it fit.
I’m just looking to see if anyone has done a basic install, minimal mods, and how much clearance was there.
Moving it is an option, but I’d prefer not to.

Used to be massive write up with pics about this v8 conversion on front page in articles section.

Rocker cover clearance could just fit a finger in gap so maybe 15mm also needed small cap conversion,lh alternator bracket & back in the day used commodore header one side & kingswood other side.

Some cars could loosen steering column & move it in the slots for clearance some needed more help than just lh steering knuckle.

I assume this is with the std covers?
Small cap conversion?
I have both HQ and Commodore manifolds to try
Was going to decide on alternator at the end because I’d prefer to do passenger side.
If all else fails I will do the LH LX type.
Will be doing the steering mod.

Plenty of space with the booster under the front guard.

Two thirds of bugger all - finger width at best with booster in std location.

Last time I had the engine out of the yellow car I just removed the booster. Ten minutes well spent.

Perfect. That booster will be slightly larger in diameter than the XU1 style I think, and the covers look reasonably tall and square.
Assume the mounts are std and the booster hasn’t been moved?

The mounts are HQ but are slotted to move the engine back a bit. I have a High Energy race sump and had to shim the mounts UP a little to get the sump to clear the crossmember.
Don’t think the booster has been moved but the car has been a race car in a previous life and been through a few owners so who knows?

Yeah std covers.

Small cap with xd rotor button instead of big cap hei...that way it easily clears firewall lip & much neater.

Think I used lh/x reproduction engine brackets with hurricane extractors & I think hq engine brackets when it had casties.

lh/x alternator bracket,small cap conversion,2" dropbase aircleaner,trimmed hq radiator,shroud & plastic fan...looked neat + low maintenance.

Thanks guys.
I plan to use the small distributor cap and have a HE sump.
Sounds like I might just fit the std covers and exhaust manifolds and see where it finishes up.

Is a booster required if you used 1’ master cylinder?

You would want one with an auto...they try to push car if sitting at lights in gear & also much more force required if trying to stall it up with sticky tyres...that was with 330mm discs/twin piston calipers & modded m/cyl.

Stiffer pedal not so bad if wearing shoes lol
