Hello all ,

Went to bed last night after reading posts on the forum about removing the heater box from LC/LJ' Z. Woke up this morning with this question . Is it possible to unscrew the 4? bolts under the dash that holds the metal lower section of the box to the firewall and disconnect the heater motor , then pull the whole thing out in one piece ?... Pretty sure you'll tell me i'm dreaming and the answer is no.

When you say heater motor I assume that you mean to unplug the wire from the fan motor that hangs down behind the glove box, correct?

You need to unplug the above mentioned wire, unbolt ducting to the windscreen and the one that blows the air to your feet. There's four nuts and one screw that hold the ducting together and in place, these will also release the cable and bracket that opens and closes the flap in the ducting. Then over behind the glove box area there's a handful of nuts to be undone. Once everything is unbolted from under the dash carefully lift it out from the engine bay in one piece. It my need to be gently levered off from its location as there can get a bit stuck in place after 40 or so years.

The top fibreglass section cannot be removed from the bottom metal plate without removing the entire unit in one piece, there's fasteners at the back of the heater box that aren't accessible until it's removed.

Thanks James for explaining that , all the posts i looked at were about the difficulty's of trying to open the box from the engine bay. Still a hassle ,but i'm pulling the dash out anyway. .

I took the plastic fan cover off so i could get the
box out more easily .as thats how you take them out.
The holes to cover are oval so you can push cover
forward to seal to fire wall they are reasonable tight
when bonnet hinges are on..when i went to put cover on i couldnt get last bolt in like the heater box was too
far back.couldnt of been much ..couldnt get it no matter
how hard i pushed on cover so i left it...damn thing..

Lift it in a straight up fashion & keep a close eye on the left side. As you see how close the bonnet hinge spring anchor

point is in Maz's pic, if lifted more from the center or right side it'll tilt the fan housing toward the hinge assy.

I had to replace mine due to being leant on & cracked, both the spare covers I've got have minor & major damage from

being lifted this way cracking one & holing the other.
