Hey guys,

I have bought a cheap 253 I have tidied up and have only just noticed that when the block has been decked at some stage they have taken most of the first number off

there is the faintest mark of the number but its too hard to see in pictures. I think it's QR848767. It was made 20th May 75.

Has anyone got any tricks to making it visible that works as I need to go for an ID inspection. if not it may need to be xrayed. Thanks Vinny

I took my wb 1 tonner for an ID check In Regency Park (not the roadworthy place) with a 253 that I had re stamped after having it decked. They told me I should have taken it in and had a new number issued. They did however pass the car.

I recently reading a forum about vintage car restoration and they were talking about acid etching to retrieve hard to read stamped chassis numbers.

Might work for your situation but I'll be stuffed if I can remember how I found the forum in the first place.

~ I think it's QR848767. It was made 20th May 75. ~

QR848767 should be roughly a May 1977 casting, but if it was QR648767 that would be pretty much spot on for 20E5. **

** Note that this isn't an exact science so don't even think about dragging me into court to testify or anything!

Do you have any old rego papers for the vehicle it was in previously? Or a receipt from purchasing the engine? Surely you will need to prove you own it when going for registration? I wouldn't have spent cent one on it before confirming it wasn't stolen or whatever, do you have written confirmation from a police check of some sort?

Also don't try to over-stamp it, you'll only end up making it look worse. I guess if you want to fix it you could pull the heads off and have a machine shop mill just that pad the number is stamped on at a slight angle to the deck and then re-stamp the number (once it is confirmed that is).

Holden should have done this from the factory. I couldn't count how many times I've had blocks decked and lost the number, it's just a bad design that could've so easily been rectified.

Acid etching will show the number but i would first try Magnetic partical testing. (cheaper & easier)

You could ask a heavy engineering workshop for a part can of White background & Black magnetic ink.

I know if someone came into my workshop looking for some for this reason, i would be happy to hand over a can of each with a little bit left in them.

Simply spray a light coat of the White background on the area , place magnets either end of the number & squirt the Black magnetic ink on. Ta da!

This system also works when trying to recover a lost chassis #. :)

I recently put this very problem to a Police Advice tent at a trade show. I explained that in the past we could run the cutter past the engine number but these days with the gasket surface finish requirements we have to center the cutter and take off the engine number. They said talk to Vic roads. I did. They said talk to the Police. I have a set of 6mm stamps and that so far has been the end of it.

Well was bad as it looked the officer accepted the number as qr848767 and the car is now registered. after sitting. Some surface rust formed and helped it stand out.

Ill look a bit better at any other future purchases.

cheers Vinny
