Been a bit slack lately
Just haven’t been spending any time working on the car.

So never got a reply from Pacemaker.
Bought a new set anyway.
Got the set with the bigger primaries.
Hopefully they aren’t to big for the 308.

Still haven’t bolted the sump on :(

Took roller rockers off though.
Need to get some Valve stem seals on the heads.
See one of my other threads.

Are Flexplate bolts for 308 same as SBC?
ARP don’t list a set for Holden V8

So it’s been quite a while since I posted
Haven’t got much more done
Finger surgery slowed me up for 3 months.

So new pacemakers have been modified with 2.5inch v bands at the collector flange.
Ceramic coated black.
Intake manifold also ceramic coated black.
Engine is back together with a new set of valve stem seals and the high volume sump.
New flex plate and arp bolts.

I started rubbing back engine bay to give it a quick coat of paint and got carried away.
So that’s where I’m at.
Some of the bay is back to bare metal, gotta prime and paint the engine bay and want to do the dash again as I was never happy with it the first time.

Some of my last posts I don’t even remember posting.

Picks or it never happened.
Engine bay sanded back
Primed
Dash repainted looks ok
But got a paint run. I suck at this painting thing.
Have light rubbed it back ready for another light coat or two.
Fingers crossed 3rd time Lucky

Moving a little bar fridge.
Clipped the condenser fin on the perfect angle.
Cut the tendon, had that reattached but wasn’t allowed to move it for 8 weeks.

Pic of the finger for a before shot please.

You can cut yourself seriously on the wierdest things.

Lucky it wasnt at some of the workplaces Ive been on.

They would have made sure that there were safety covers on all fridge condensors by now.

Or thrown the exposed ones out and replaced them with covered types.

Cheers

Pick doesn’t show how deep it was.
Bent finger was me trying to straighten just had nothing trying to straighten fingers.
Could still make a fist no problem. Not any more though. Can’t make as tight of a clinched fist any more.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the comments.

Ye I’m hearing you about progress.
Mine sat for months with nothing serious happening. Life gets in the way of resto modding and building.
It’s only been the last couple weeks that I have been getting sh!+ done.

I spent way too much time sanding and priming the engine bay only to get a shed quality paint job.
Had a lil spider land on the final colour coat, he just smeared worse so just cleared over the top of him.
Had my shirt touch rad support a couple times when spraying fire wall, so there is a few blemishes there.
Overall happy for the first time I have ever sprayed 2k and clear.

So diff is back in.
Wheels on, and it’s back on the ground.
Hasn’t been on the ground for 6months I reckon.

Hopefully I can get engine and box back in this arvo.

Thanks Swarbs
I gotta keep on it.
My boy is grade 12 next year so gotta have it going for his graduation.

So engine is back in yay.
Right pain in the ass but it’s in there.
When it came out it had a standard Holden sump, so it came out easy.
I fitted the high volume sump when the engine was out. This made it a prick to get back in.
Had to loosen off the front suspension crossmember so it dropped down a lil bit to give a bit extra clearance.

Wanted to fit the new extractors while I was fitting the engine.
Run into some issues there.
The gaskets that come with the pacemakers are the pressed steel multilayer jobs.
Firstly they don’t even fit on the head properly. Can’t get the bolt holes lined up while the gasket is sitting flat on the exhaust port face.
Second, as I got ported heads and the big primary extractors, the gasket blocks up heaps of the port.
So I tried to get a die grinder to open up the gasket a bit but this is jus making the gasket layers separate.
I’m thinking I may just try to use a silicone sealant only, I have read two threads on this with mixed results.

Don’t know why my picks are rotating sideways.

How many times have you heard people winge about parts that don’t fit.

Well I’m gunna have my turn.

Aeroflow engine oil dipstick.
Oring set up on it sucks and coz I got the new extractors with the bigger primary’s, it’s kinda squished between the block and the extractors.

Flex plate cover
Not sure what brand it is.
But the bolt holes don’t line up.

ARP converter bolts are a poofteenth too big for the holes.
Think I’m gunna drill out the flex plate and converter.
It’s less than 1mm in it.
Bolts would go in if you were rough enough.

However more progress tonight.
Got the pipes bolted onto the heads just to test fit and check clearance.
I’ll get the grinder and an angle drill out to start modifying a few bits tomorrow.

Can’t find my damn starter motor bolts :(
Visit to rare spares on the cards tomorrow.

I had same issues with gearbox and engine dipstick. Had to modify both. Had to drill flex plate out also.

Hi Mick.  Great progress.  I'm wondering if you have your steering column in (I can't see from the photos) as I'm curious how you went/go with clearance.  I'm at that point and having difficulty with the lower uni joint, and I have bought a Borgeson one to help.  Cheers Ron

Hi Cook
Na not back in yet. I have looked at it though and thought it looks like it had clearance. I’ll let you know how I get on.
Have you got the pacemaker PH5250 extractors?
The 5250 has 1&3/4 primary’s
The 5200 has 1&5/8 primary’s.
I got the rag joint On one of the joints which I will likely have to change as it will probably melt or catch fire as it is pretty close to the pipes.
I don’t like my chances of getting the steering uni cover on though. For one I don’t have one and 2 that will definitely not fit.

Steering column is possibly a job for this weekend.
I am test fitting the carpet and want to mark out the column hole from the engine bay side, then I can cut an accurate hole.
Dunno what brand carpet it is, but it seems really sloppy over trans tunnel.

Got a set of starter motor bolts from rare spares today, so I can do the test fit of the starter with the flex plate cover on.
Then I can modify the cover so it actually lines up with some bolt holes or drill and tap new holes in the auto.
Drill out the converter bolt holes and bolt the converter and flex plate together.
Then refit it all Then I can bolt up the extractors. Got some of the JB weld copper high temp silicone, I’m gunna try without gaskets.
Then fit steering column.

It’s pretty busy down that side of the chassis.
Steering column,Brake lines, Fuel lines
And I’m not sure if all autos are like that but I got trans cooler lines to run down that side. Toying with the idea of bringing the trans cooler lines over or under and running them down the passenger side of the chassis towards the front.

I had same issues with gearbox and engine dipstick. Had to modify both. Had to drill flex plate out also.

The trans dipstick I plan on drilling a couple holes through the lip on the firewall it seems to fit up nice at this point of time.

The engine dipstick is a flexible Aeroflow job I relocated it so it comes up at no3 spark plug.
Not as straight of a path as going to no5 But doesn’t look quite right at no5. The extractor runs closer to the block and looks to push on the braid more than I like.
It’s actually touching the pipes in both positions. The dipstick entry to the sump is awkward when heading to no5 spark plug.

Thanks for letting me know you drilled out the flex plate holes.
Although I didn’t think drilling em out was a going to be big deal.
Just kind of eases your mind somewhat when you hear someone else has already done it.
