I am loosing water from bearing and shaft assembly behind the fan hub of the water pump. The motor is  4.2lt. There is minor play when I move the fan from side to side which tells me that the shaft and seals are worn or damaged. I have booked my car in to have a new water pump installed for this Monday.  The mechanic is only 1.5km away. My fear is that the water pump will fail causing the fan to damage under my bonnet or the pump rotor causing damage to timing cover.

My question is: can I disconnect the fan drive belt to drive to mechanic without causing other issues?

I appreciate your help.

Probably more chance of motor overheating through fan belt being taken of than a 1.5 km trip from cold with a full radiator and cap loosened to relieve pressure in system. Drive it like your Granny and you should have no issues.

^^^ +1. It'll be fine going such a short distance just make sure the cooling system is full before you start.

The pump isn't going to fall to pieces any time soon.

Agree with the above comments, most importantly is that the new pump has the cast type impeller ?

Thanks for the advice. I will keep drive belt on. I drive like a grannie anyway.

Any recommendation of which make of water pump to use. I will ask the mechanic to ensure that he fits a pump with a cast type impeller.

Sadly not all GMB are cast. Mine was pressed stainless and is still in it's box sitting in the garage.

If worried about the fan - just remove it, NOT the belt,   if not stopping in traffic   should be fine
