Mine looks like this too.

I think a roof replacement is required???

Would love to know if someone else has fixed this without replacing the roof

Lots of work there.

Would search for a roof chop for sure.

Wondering how much rust will be in the unseen places on the edges of the roof.

I had a piece of metal folded and then used a strecher/shrinker to bend it round to the correct profile. No need to cut up another roof if you can't find one, though I guess it'd be easier.

I commend you to taking up the challenge to restore what looks like a massive job. Looking at your photo there seems to be rust through out the area. Not knowing what condition the rest of the car is in, your level of restoration and your skills, this may become an expensive and time consuming exercise. As an ex panel beater and can tell you that nothing is easy. However, there are many experienced people on the site that can provide you with help. Good luck mate.

I had to dig up the old PC to find this diagram I got the sheet metal supplier to fold to.

It's not very clear but it might be of some use if you can't find a roof to cut up.

Gday i know that it looks pretty shagged as it sits but look at it as another panel replacement. i have put heaps of roofs on cars over the years and its about measuring things first a million times, bracing the car cutting and welding once.

The easy way is through the pillars and if your donor has mint gutters a very neat  job can be done. Putting it on as a skin is a lot harder and alot of unpicking of panels.

Put some more photos up if you can and i think the hardest part will be to find a clean donor roof.

Hi all, i have a very sad roof rust wise and have managed to get a rust free roof cut for my LH.
Does anyone have any idea how many hours i should allow to cut and shut it?
I have found an old timer who has been in the trade for 30+ years, he gave me his hourly rate, but i didnt ask him how long it would take, dont want to ask again and be a pain, just a rough idea would be ok.
Just want to make sure i have enough of the folding stuff before i go ahead. Thanks

Too many variables there re "old timer".

Has he retired?

Is there any rush?

Is he working from home in his own time?

Doing it through a business? :dontknow:

Through a business, his own, works 6 hours a day

No rush

In a shed he leases with a Mechanic

Not retired

Gotta be at least 30hrs work? Depending on where he's cutting it from?

Damn that doesn’t look very good.
Looking at the rust on the roof/rear window and parcel shelf
All I’m thinking is what else are you gunna find once you move onto next section of the car.

Please someone tell me to f$€k off if I’m out line.
But if this isn’t a job you can’t do yourself than attempting restoration of a body in this condition is gunna burn a massive hole in your budget.

I would guestimate about a minimum 20 hours to do a roof chop and replacement doing it myself. I take my time and usually take longer than i estimate. That rear window channel would be a challenge but with patience it is repairable as said above. I would prefer to start from a better shell unless it was and slr5000 or something rare.

I don’t want to deter anyone from bringing an old Torana back to life and going by some of the repairs and restorations achieved on this forum anything can be repaired.

I guess if the roof is the only problem then it’s worth the effort.
However if sills, floors, quarters, plenum are all rusted through then I would chase a better chassis to start with.
Doors guard anything bolt on not a problem as others can be sourced.

However as said if it’s rare model or has sentimental values then again everything is repairable.

I thought mine was rust free.
Under dash working on rewiring the car.
Nearly put my finger through the firewall into the plenum.
Wanted to cry
At this stage I’m pretending it didn’t happen.

Just want to clarify

Everything I type was based on paying someone to perform the rust repairs.
If you can do it your self then have a crack.
I’m not that talented and have no experience so it’s not something I would attempt.

Think I need to stop talking shi+

This is what mine looks like. I have a roof cut with no rust, thanks for the replys.

I thought about 30 hours, i.e. a week.

The old girl has the usual rust in the sills quarters , pans etc, but it was a complete car.

Im expecting to find firewall and plenum rust, that goes with the territory.

I don’t think you paid to much but I wouldn’t be paying someone fix it.
I think you will get your money back by selling parts.
Again fix it yourself yes.
Pay someone to fix is gunna hurt lots.

I’ll buy the rear door vents off you

It's only too far gone if you have to pay full rate to get someone else to do the repairs.

If you're able to do the metal work yourself then I'd say you've got a bit of a bargain as long as it's fairly complete.
