Hi Guys; not quite a Torana question but as I’m always impressed with the Holden 6 knowledge (and passion) shown on this site I thought it was the only place to ask.

I’m after suggestions as to which needles (fixed, not sprung) I should initially start with in my triple HS6 SU carb / Speco GT-X manifold setup, (they are fitted with .100 “ jets).

The motor will be an X2 186 block bored to 60 thou running a black 3.25 inch counterbalanced crank, starfire rods, dished pistons, stage 3 Yella Terra head with roller rockers, extractors and HID ignition. Cam spec yet to be confirmed but will be a mild performance grind suitable for an elderly, classic street car.

I realize it will be a guessing game until I have the engine running and have dusted off my old carb balancer and Colourtune setup – I’ve been running injected motors for the last two decades and am looking forward to reliving the thrill of running multiple carbs, here’s hoping the old skills kick in!

My initial plan was to run 0A6 as recommended for the XU1 SU conversion but a little research suggests they tended towards running rich and the 0A5 would be a better choice?

Any advice will be much appreciated and I do realize we are talking ‘guesstimates’ here, all I’m looking for is a starting point.

OA7 needles would be a better starting point. I'll check my notes in the morning & get back to you.

Are they always 100” jets in these SU’s?

My HS2’s are always 90”.

OA7 with red springs will get you pretty close as Warren said.

I think you will find OA5 will be to rich . The smaller the number the richer they are.

I was recommended to run RH but found them to very rich every where.

Brad they run 100' jets in HS6s  90' in the smaller carbs..

HS2's, HS4's, HIF4's use a 90" jet.
HS6's, HD6's, H6's use a 100" jet
HS8's use a 100" jet
HD8's use a 125" jet

There may be exceptions? But above is what I've always understood they run.

I used to run RH's and red springs in my HS6's and this worked well for my combo.
I run HD8's now though.

HS8's also use .125 jets & I've also found some Rovers with .090" jets.

Yes, my HS8s came with .125 jets stock... I still put new ones in though, but yes they were definately .125 stock on mine... I think it depends on the application...
