Hi guys/gals,

Been a while since I've done body work. I am currently taking my engine bay back to bare metal (did this 10yrs ago) and going to paint it using the 3 step process from KBS. I have a very small amount of filler work that I need to do around previous rust repairs just to smooth out the welds etc. What I want to know is what fillers work with the KBS rust seal and what's the best stuff to use to clean up after I have done the filler work.

My plan is to aqua clean, rust blast, then hand paint the areas that need filler. Wait till its tacked off, put the filler on, wait till its dry, sand it back then wipe down with something? Then hit the whole engine bay with the spray gun.

Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I would put a coat of kbs down. Lightly sand the area that needs bog and bog it.
Paint the second coat of kbs thus sandwiching in the filler.
I spray painted kbs in my engine bay not very happy with the finish but hey better than it was before.

Thanks mate. What didn't you like about the finish? What type of filler did you use?

I would only KBS rust repairs and rust prone areas, then before it goes off spray the 2k etch over KBS and bare metal.  Now you can start bogging and smoothing.

I definately wouldnt spray etch on rust seal until it is fully cured. Here is the description from KBS coatings website regarding fusion etch that MAZ has shown above..

Fusion is an all-purpose grey primer ideal for promoting adhesion between multiple surface coatings, including applications of topcoats and primers or over fully cured RustSeal. Fusion allows you to topcoat over a smooth, rock-hard RustSeal surface that has been in place for months or years

Regardless of primer to be used, rust seal should be allowed to fully cure before application, same as any coatings used etch, hifill, topcoat etc. Im a panel beater not painter however I was always taught that, as delamination between different coatings can occur.

Just my 2c

Thanks guys. The fusion etch primer looks like the way to go for adhesion to fully cured rust seal. Regarding filling I think I will just follow the US site:

https://supportdesk....r-over-RustSeal

https://success.kbs-...-over-rustseal/

I was planning to use 3M platinum plus as this was the only filler I could find that states it is suited for urethane paints.

I am currently about to begin the rust blast process. Then next weekend hoping to get some paint down with any luck.
