Hi all, Removed my LC tail lights to re-caulk, and wondering are there supposed to be any nuts holding the two halves together, aside from the nuts that hold the assembly to the body. Otherwise, how do you get compression on the gasket?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Chris ,I'm sure nuts are used on the housing to hold it together ,then on the inside of the boot .

That's what I would have though too Paul, thanks. Very annoying paying people to put things together for you you, then you find f'ups like this. There was no mastic between light assembly and body so was getting water in the boot when car is washed. Removed lights, find this problem. Still, not as bad as a boot full of petrol because they did not tighten the big fuel hose clamps. Lucky I found that one just after I filled up.

There is supposed to be a thin nut holding the assembly together.
I uesed 3M strip-caulk to seal the light assembly to the body.

Thanks Adam, yep, I purchased some of that, now I need the nuts that hold the assembly together. Anyone know what size they are?

Thanks John, send pics to 0412 206 017 I was hoping to get something today as I need to put the light back in before a Sydney Torana Club picnic this Sunday, but it's looking like I will have to put it back as is until I get the hardware.

Looking for some help on this again. I did take a tail light to a local nut and bolt shop. He did not have any nuts that would fit. I suspect because the threaded rods are worn (refer pic). I purchased a set of nuts and threaded inserts, new nuts just fall to the bottom of the original threaded rods. I have queried the size of the nuts and threaded rod, I am told they are M8 and seller has never had a prob with these before. Anybody confirm size, I would not have thought they were metric. Supplier says to just remove original rods and wind new ones in. I am worried that threaded rod will break off, then will have to drill and tap. Is this likely or do these buggers always wind out with a bit of force via vice grips. I can't do the two nut trick. If I could, I would not need to swap the threaded rods.  Please help. I hope to sort this out before Canberra Nationals.

The LC parts catalogue lists the tail light nuts as N10 - 24 which is a UNC thread. M8 metric would be approx twice the diameter of the original studs.

Have a look at this UNC thread chart  for the specs on #10 - 24 imperial thread. https://www.engineer...unf-d_1809.html

The thread does look pretty average. Are they all like that?
From memory, I had one of the threaded rods unscrew during disassembly because the nut was locked on.
So they should not be in the body that tight, and you should be able to unscrew them and replace them.

They are imperial, not metric. And M8 sounds too big if it was. (Ha ha.....as above...)
I sourced the mounting nuts from rare spares....Tail Lamp To Body Nuts LC - LX HK - HG All HJ - HZ Sedan
From memory they are not thin enough to use to assemble the body, but they would be a good start to working out the thread.
I’ll see if I can find pictures.......I hate to say it, but I might even have some nuts somewhere, but I just packed up the house to move in two weeks.
I find the bolt shops a bit hit and miss......some are not that great at identifying threads.

As Dave stated, it's definitely not metric, i think they're a 5/16" unc, just get some new booker bar & cut to size + the nuts. Gary.

According to the thread chart  #10 = 4.826mm OD (.19"), 5mm = 3/16" (.20")

5mm = M5 not M8.

Thank you all. Yes, definitely not M8, that's what the seller called them. M5 or #10 - 24 sounds more like it. They are all like that Tony. Trying to sort it out so I can screw the two halves together then put it back in place.

The LJ tail light housings use the exact same mounting nuts (GMH Pt No. SP1900) as the LC.  A 3/16" x 24 thread tap fits the nuts perfectly.

Thanks S-Pack. Will have to get a new set of vice grips today and get the threaded rods out. Hope I don't have to drill and tap.

Sounds like it would have been easier buying the ones off me, I even have plenty of the original threaded rods, anyways good luck with it.

Would not have been easier, the hard bit is getting the old threads out.  Not winding new ones in.

Update - Your help above gave me confidence to yank the crapped out threaded inserts out with a set of vice-grips. Only one (out of four so far) broke off and will have to be drilled out. They had to come out as the thread was so worn, the correct size nuts had nothing to grab on to. Don't know why they got that bad. The new, so-called M8 inserts screwed straight in.

Let's just say because some of the steel grades they used were pretty low quality, i have 2 shops that i go through for imperial sizes in good quality steel, definitely not cheap though. But I'd rather get the better product. If you put up the exact measurements & some photo's including the nuts, i might look at getting some in the good quality steel done. Gary.

Drilling broken studs out could be a challenge.

Apply some WD40, CRC, Penetrene or even some good old diesel around the studs and let it soak in for a while before you try to extract any more.
