Hi All.

Could someone shed some light on the way to tell the difference between a 6cyl and V8 a/c unit?

Mainly just the condenser fan unit in engine bay. Also the compressor.

From what I can tell is the compressor brackets look like 6cyl ones but compressor V8?

Compressor model number is 1131046 and is a Frigidaire brand.

Pics are of what I have.

Thanks for any help.

Rowan

Same compressor for V8 and 6 but brackets different . Bit hard for tell on my phone what brackets you got . The fan housing and VIR unit was different on LH LX between the 6 and V8 but when the UC came out they used the V8 one so your unit is either LH LX V8 or it could be UC

tuxedoss yes it seems it is a V8 version from the drawings I have found there is a different compressor between 6 and 8 along with the brackets.

Mine seems to be V8 fan unit and compressor but has 6cyl brackets for compressor.

AFAIK the compressor is the same for both 6-cyl & V8. Yes, the brackets are different, but these bolt on, the bare compressor is the same.

What 'difference' have you found ?

I’ve got both a 6 and V8 setup, I’ll have a look at them later and let you know what’s different , from memory it’s just the bolt on brackets . Although I’m wondering if the hose connection on the compressor is different as the compressors are in different positions . But that alloy block with the hose connections also bolts on

Just checked your drawings yes the connection is different . Your compressor has the V8 connector that is bent over , the 6 goes straight up

The junction block unbolts from the rear of the compressor & is available in many different configurations, just like the brackets.

It is not considered part of the compressor.

Dr Terry

The difference I saw was in the compressor, v8 has the long locator things that are seen on the rear end on each corner as such but the 6cyl does not have these. See pic where circled.

Just checked mine, the drawing for the 6cyl is wrong, all compressors have those bits you circled as they hold the back of the compressor to the body.

Yours is a 6cyl version from the junction block. But as Dr Terry said that is a bolt on and can be changed.

Here's some pictures of a V8 and 6cyl, you can see the V8 outlet is bent over at right angles

Hi

I used the compressor unit for the H series as its more efficient and robs less HP.I had to get the bracket bolt recess changed and welded as they I couldn't get a Torana one to fit the motor and that compressor but works great. If I could work out how to attachs pics I would .

Did that work?
I am wondering if the hose clamped hose was enough to hold pressure?

I don't know what you mean by "H series" but GM-H used the GM A6 for every factory-fitted a/cond system from HK to WB. The same compressor was also used for factory a/cond in LH to UC. Even VB & VC Commodore used them.

The only changes made over time to the A6 was the mounting threads changed for SAE to metric in 1981. They also made them in 2 sizes:- 10 cubic inch & 12 cubic. The 2 sizes are identical externally & therefore interchangeable.

If you used a smaller Sanden style compressor, these were never factory fitted in those days, but were very common in the aftermarket. They are smaller in displacement, so therefore need less hp to drive them, but they are not "more efficient", they are just smaller @ 8 cubic inches. So in reality you need to drive them at nearly 50% more rpm to deliver the same refrigerant capacity. They work fine, but the A6 will cool better at lower rpm.

Hi

Yes makes sense it works harder now but I liked it as although aftermarket it was visually mare appealing with smaller pipes .What I was trying to relay is the compressor and bracket can be purchased for the H series as an aftermarket product if you so desire but the bracket needs reworking to fit the Torana.

What free photo sharing sites are people using as I tried google and Flickr but cant upload any pics to share
