Own a 72 XU1 and noticed that on the back half of both rear guards from about midway down to where the rear mudflap would be positioned has the lip curled inwards. Read in Fiv Antoniou's book mentions this as a factory modification commencing in the LC model. I thought it was one of the previous owners who may have had wide wheels on it at some stage so I was going to bend them back to stop mud etc accumulating. Can I confirm with other XU1 owners whether their rear guards are the same?

C.A.M.S regs for Group C allow for minor fettling of guards in that era, just what is "minor" I suppose was very much open to interpretation  during this period of racing. My XU1 which is September 1972 build and ran in racing during this period has similar treatment to what you have described and has had no objections raised on recent examination for Group C / Heritage cars log book continuations. A car recently sold nearby and very much the real original deal did not have these lips massaged from new, however my car is known to be in the very first small run of the "1973" spec and was earmarked for race use from day one. It might be a case of a little like A Moffs  thin glass and alloy door panels 'ex factory that have only just been fessed up to perhaps?

Ok well thats good to know. I assumed from Fiv Antoniou's book top of page 135, Service letter dated 1970 (see attached) that this re-shaping may have been performed by GMH, but now that I read it again, its a recommendation IF tyre to fender foul is experienced and I'm not even sure if they mean the front or the rear. My diff and gearbox plugs have a washer welded to them but the car definitely has no roll cage holes anywhere. I only know its history back to 1978 so not sure what its life was before that. Mabey it was raced who knows.

I was under the impression that at the Brisbane plant the guards were rolled and the front of the guards were tapped down. While at the Adelaide plant the guards were left alone and the front guards were NOT tapped down..............

Mines Adelaide and its only the rear 10" curled in. I'm not trying to read too much into this as these cars were of no significance in the 80's when I was hooning around in them. I bought it off a mate who had it since late 70's so I know he didn't do it, so someone has probably just tapped them in to fit fatter tyres, its just that I read this in the Fiv book and thought I would try and confirm this with other members who own genuine cars.

Brisbane built cars had the front guards tapped down ( as pictured ) they also had the inner guards rolled to remove any sharp edges. Adelaide built cars did not...........

Hey there FLY AGAIN , yes I agree with the front guards being tapped down as can be clearly seen in your pic .

We will have to agree to disagree about the inner guards rolled to remove any sharp edges -  not on my beast .

If you have a photo of this done to a legit Brisbane car then that would be helpful for me .

Are we on the same page about inner guards rolled ? To me that means wheel arch lip , have cut my hands a few times over the decades on these.

Sorry for what appears to be some confusion. Probably my fault for not explaining it. Kockum is correct I meant the rear mudguard inner lip. Specifically the last 10inches towards the rear bottom guard.

Are everyones front and rear guard lips at 90 degrees ?

MFM Mark, Are the front guards on your car still the original guards and if so are they still at 90 degrees ? This may indicate weather or not your car has had its guard lips played with to fit larger wheels and tyre's at some stage of its life ............
