I have a 6cyl 78 rana hatch. What is the easiest conversertion these days?. Wanted to go with the 5L 4 sp auto option but would enjoy feedback from builders.

1978 LX or 1978 UC?

It makes a huge difference. Although there is little physical difference, the UC was never available from the factory with a V8 option, therefore must be engineered. If it's an LX you can bolt a 5.0L straight in, you just have to comply with the emission controls originally fitted to either the engine block or vehicle, whichever is the newer.

Well immediately the easy solution is holden 308/304...however good parts availability is surprisingly difficult depending on what you want to do. If it's just a standard motor then you can just throw anything in that you can find. I'm building a semi decent 355 at the moment and finding a virgin bore block that passes a sonic test has been very difficult, went through 3 blocks before finally finding one with bore walls thick enough to trust.

I reckon these days if you were to go SBC then you may as well go LS just from an affordability standpoint.
Either way once you go away from holden then its gotta be engineered and $$$ begin to go up...
