Ok I need some help here,I've just destroyed the handbrake cable boots trying to get them on ,they tend to split as I try and fit them over the threaded section.Ive tried the boiling water trick and plenty of lube without success .Anyone else had this problem.Paul.

Mine slipped over the handle end with lube without splitting. Just unlucky?

Hi Paul,

The cable boots can only go on from the threaded rod end of the cables.

If they are the original 40 something year old boots from your car then I'm not surprised they have split this Popsicle stand of a joint.

If they are new Repro boots then take them back to whence you procured them and complain that you used two whole tubes of KY and they were still too tight to fit over your rod. :D

They have a tiny hole ,it's got me stuffed how you'd get them through ,as soon as a tried pushing the threaded end though ,they split.Purchased from Rares Brizzy.

The larger one split where the seam is ,the smaller one tore away at the end ,that's it still on the thread.

Tightly wrap the thread with sticky tape and form a wick at the end with the tape.

Some rubber grease or some pump pack handwash to lubricate the tape, feed the nipple on the rubber boot over the tape wick and work the nipple fully onto the end of the rod.

Now the nipple on the boot should slide down the tape, over the square crimped part of the steel rod and down onto the cable.

I think from memory I used some retaining clip pliers to stretch the opening from the outside, then slide the threaded end through.
Lube used from memory.
I then proceeded to tear me using a screw driver while putt Ng it in the body.......ffs

Well ,what a BITCH of a job ! I've used pvc tape and dishwashing liquid to try and get these suckers on ,still very hard ,definitely won't just slide on with ease ,I have the smaller one on without splitting it ,I have the original handbrake cables maybe slightly bigger at the threaded end ? Dunno.Stay tuned.

Rubber grease was my best friend for stuff like that, incredible how much you can stretch a small orrafice with this lube.

I still think the first ones I first bought were a slightly different rubber compound ,I tried grease and as I pushed them on one split down the seam and the top came off the other, the holes were also slightly smaller .
