Are there two (2) styles of gear stick console boots for LJ manuals (XU1)??. Mines a May 72 XU1 and I've known its full history back to late 70s and the car is pretty well appears unmolested and been in a storage shed for the last 20 years till I bought it early this year, so went to replace my gear shift boot which was worn out and after some research realised that the original boot on my car is unlike anything I've seen on the forums? See photos for comparison. My original boot looks original and the vinyl is brittle and dirty however still had the original plastic base and it just looked factory issued/manufactured? I unpicked the stitching in my one so I could get one made but ended up buying a replacement boot from Brad Merrick (see photo) but am reluctant to replace it until I am 100% sure it is correct.

Does anyone have an LJ XU1 with a gear stick boot like my original??

Hi Mark

The gearshift vinyl cover that you removed from your car is not the original item your car left the VAP with.

Thanks for the reply Dave. Probably wasn't a very interesting topic to put on the forum, but when I removed the old boot it felt and looked like it had been on the car from new.

AHA, I see what it is now. Someone has taken an original vinyl handbrake gaiter and fitted it to the gearshift.

Another thing to note is the plastic retainer the cover is fitted to originally had 4 plastic pins, one in each corner, to attach the assembly to the console.

Those 4 pins have broken off and holes drilled in lieu of to bolt or screw the retainer to the console.

Oh ok. thats interesting. See photos of the screws I removed and of the nut which hold the shift diagram. Can I assume that this type of nut is what was used originally to retain the boot as well?

If my memory serves me correctly they are not a speed nut like that which secures the g/shift pattern plate to the console.

I would describe them as a push on type nut that grabs onto the pin. They are difficult to remove once fitted. That is why the pins usually break off the cover retainer trying to remove them.

Actually, they were probably very much like the nuts used with the screws in your pic, although I vaguely remember the ones on my console were like a disc.
