The clutch linkages on my LJ XU1 were replaced in the early 80's with NOS. I know the previous owner (mate) had drama with the original factory linkages and bought quite a few NOS linkage parts from our local Holden dealer which I was told from Holden were a modified part (modified version of the original) and they came with the car when I bought it this year. What I want to know is what actually breaks when these linkages fail? The only part that I can see that would most likely fail is the wire rod from the pedal inside cab which exits into engine bay.

Yep the only clutch linkage part that has ever suddenly failed on mine is the pull rod from the pedal to the relay lever.

Sure the other parts wear and can eventually fail.

BTW, part of your mechanism is from a HK, T, G Holden.

lol, a cable operated clutch would have been too simple for the then GMH engineers to design but Vauxhall could do it. :spit:

The rat trap started in 67 camaro roughly Dave, didn't work in it, but holden thought they'd borrow the piece of shit & see if it was as bad from 69 - 80 & it was !

Looking at possibly doing these after Christmas mate, but way to busy before then. I've got some idea's on modifying 1 for a trial too. No idea on price until we have to time to look into them. Gary.

Thinking if the only item failing in the rat trap system is the thin rod from the pedal and the remainder work ok (other than normal wear and tear), then mabey manufacture a stronger rod?

Yep snapping ball off clutch pull rod was common especially with heavier pressure plate for hipo 6cyl that needed it.

Had to have a spare as never knew when it would eventually break as new replacents seemed weaker.

Other than that pivot points will grind down or holes elongate from decades of use...weld em' up & file/grind untill new again.

I've also snapped a couple of clutch pedals using HD pressure plates. I absolutely despise the rat traps as they fail at the most inconvenient times....

I had the anchor strap break - this is the part that slips over the pedal way up under the dash and the same part has the cable connected to the end of it going the fire wall.

Lucky it happened close to home (thankfully car was with NRMA for short tow) BUT even more thankfully I was not in heavy traffic and could glide to the edge of the road. The round anchor part on the actual clutch pedal had worn into a groove and the anchor part (see pic) had just grooved itself in with no free play. The anchor part is held on by a small clip - think Rares have them.

As outlined above - a terrible set up.

Yep, horrible design, cheap and nasty engineering.

All the pivot points would wear and chop out due to poor design and lack of lubrication.

I used to repair and replace frequently back in the day (learnt to change gears without the clutch too), but eventually decided to get a new set of linkages all hard chromed to see if that would help.

Never touched them again, and I drove my poor old Torrie for 500k miles.

Hi Gary, this is a long shot, but did you end up making any rat traps ? Do you have any for sale or do you know anyone that sells them complete ? Thanks Nick
