What is everyone's opinion of the correct running in procedure? After cam has been bedded in, I have always let it get nice and warm and then drove it like I stole it.

Prime oiling system- from memory your cam was a solid flat tappet, so I would use a zinc additive or just a good penrite oil that suits your clearances... they have a few god running in additives for flat tappet cams.. just look them up...

Then when she starts, hold idle about 2500 for about 25 minutes or so...

Then, once she is ready to drive, load up the engine but avoid max rpm for about half a tank. Keep it under 3/4 throttle for first 10 minutes of driving but after that full throtte is ok but avoid 7000rpm (if that is your max, for example). Make sure you load up the engine by hills etc.. dont go silly with putting it in 4th gear going up a huge hill, but yeah, put some load on the engine in various gears to help the rings seat.

Once you have gone through about half to full tank, drive it like you stole it. Babying engines will do more harm than good IMHO

Oh, I forgot- I like to heat cycle as well in that first run in- so stop the car after 10 minutes, let it cool... Do again for 15 minutes... let it cool... then 30 minutes.... I was shown this procedure many years ago with race engines and it works well.

Can't take it on the road is a bit of a problem.
But I normally leave it in D for drag first couple runs, still Max throttle, then if everything is OK, recline shifts after that.

If you are planning on getting it dyno tuned, they can run it in for you then...

Failing that, just run it in at the strip, maybe;

Launch at low rpm and give it the boot from down low (like 1200rpm)

1st run- rev 3/4 throttle up to 5000rpm,

let engine cool

2nd run - rev 3/4 throttle up to 5500rpm,

let engine cool

3rd run - rev 3/4 throttle up to 6000rpm

Remaining runs - full throttle but keep rev limit to maybe 6000 or 6500rpm, until your confident.

It has an electric water pump and fans, so I can bring the heat down pretty quick and prevents hot spots. Dyno time will depend on everything being together in time. Next race meet in 23/24 November, since the motor was out I just decided to do some other stuff (looks at dismantled car), but nothing like a deadline to give you inspiration!

Basically, I like a hard run in but dont go silly... Ive seen more problems associated with a babied run in than a hard run in...
