Engine bay XU1

Hi everyone can someone confirm if the engine bay on an XU1 was gloss black or satin black it is hard to tell from photos most look satin.

Early up to mid 1971 I would say Satin.Someone else may confirm that.

Mines May 72 and it looks closer to gloss although hard to tell as is shitty looking. It was explained to me that it probably looked like if you sprayed it gloss acrylic and the shine you get straight off the gun.

It "IS" a semi gloss finish from the factory. There's very little flattening base added & if you polish it, it will look like a gloss finish, but eventually revert back to the semi gloss finish, hence why it can appear gloss ect, to the un trained eye. Gloss levels are determined by the amount of flattening base basically. Gary.

Gmh do not describe their paint from the era apart from, gloss, semi gloss & low gloss.

Cheers for that i have some 2k black that has 50% flatting base so i might use that, and use GMH black for the suspension components.

It may be to much flattening base possibly, different brands require different amounts, just spray a test piece of steel, or preferably get access to a spectrometer to match the colour, before you strip the old paint off. Much easier & then you know it's right. With the spectro match, the smaller the number, the better the match. Gary.
